General Description
Uludag University, the Faculty of Arts and Sciences, Philosophy Department, was primarily founded in 1990. Philosophy Department undertakes the mission of providing students to gain a philosophical view while presenting them the main fields of problems in philosophy throughout its past within accoutrements of history of philosophy.
Department of Philosophy at Uludag University accepts students in two-stage exams to be put in practice from the 2010-2011 academic year. According to the renewed latest University Entrance Exam application, the applicants would be accepted on their TM 3 points (Turkish-Mats-Social Sciences programs). According to the new University Entrance System issued and carried out by YÖK (Board of Higher Education); all the students already been enrolled in the department also have got the chance of taking English Preparatory Course for semesters, if they need or want.
Following the registration period, the academic advisors would be assigned for the new registered students; they will be helped and supported on both Double Major Undergraduate Program and Subspecialty Program; also, the Department performs a significant role on the Erasmus and Farabi Exchange programs. In addition to that, our Department of Philosophy is said to be the most preferred department by the students who want to study Double Major Program or Subsidiary Programs as well as it offers a variety of General Elective Courses for the students from the other faculties. Additionally, The Philosophy Students’ Club having a privileged place among all the other Student Unions is helped and supported by the Department’s teaching staff, they also make contributions not only to its companions but also the other students form the various faculties for setting up a close relation with Philosophy on the basis of meeting their requirements.
The activities of Department of Philosophy at Uludag University are not only depend on the academic teaching of philosophy but also carry out its mission regarding the social aspects; in addition to offering BA education and post-graduate studies together with Erasmus programs aimed for abroad and inland Farabi exchange programs; the philosophy department also publishes its periodical philosophy journal KAYGI issued twice a year, which is searched and scanned by “Ulakbim” (Social Sciences Data Base); Philosopher’s Index, Index Islamicus, Index Copernicus and MLA Bibliography. Department also holds many meetings and seminars under the supervision of UFED (Uludag Philosophy Union) and tries to make philosophy gain a widespread interest on social platforms; we also collaborate with civil society organizations.
Department of philosophy depends on the system of first stage degree which consists of 240 ECTS credits in higher education. After the programme has completed and the qualifications of the programme have provided, undergraduate degree of Philosophy is taken.

In first cycle degree, candidates must have high school diploma or equivalent and have to get sufficient points from the examination of Student Selection and Placement System

Specific arrangements for the recognition of prior learning
The provisions in “Regulation on Transfer among Associate and Undergraduate Degree Programs, Double Major, and Subspecialty and the Principals of Credit Transfer among Institutions in Higher Education Institutions” are applied.

Qualification Requirements and Regulations
To get the first cycle degree in Philosophy, students have to complete successfully all the compulsory and elective courses (totaly 240 ECTS) and their grade point average must be at least 2.0 over 4.00.

Profile of The Programme
Aim of the Uludag University, the Faculty of Arts and Sciences, Philosophy Department is to educate graduates who can recognize the problem areas of philosophy with accoutrements of history of philosophy, who think abstract therefore can converge with philosophical view to the cultural, social and ethical problems of our age, who criticize, pose questions, discontent with problems and seek solutions, who have awareness of responsibility.

Occupational Profiles of Graduates With Examples
Graduates who take pedagogical formation have the opportunity to work in high schools and in training centers as Teacher of Group of Philosophy and Psychological Counseling and Guidance in both private and public sectors. Graduates can make academical career by taking second and third cycle programmes. They can also canalize in several job fields as public relations, advertising, advertisement authorship, editorial in written and visual media, criticism conjoint with their personal improvements and in interpretership depending on their foreign language level.

Access to Further Studies
Students who completed successfully the undergraduate education, must have sufficient foreign language knowledge and have to get the required points from the examination “Selection Examination for Academic Personnel and Graduate Studies “(ALES) in order to continue their studies with post-graduate programs such as second and third cycle.

Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading
In the beginning of the semester every student has to register to the course he wants to participate. In order to take the final exams of the semester, the student has to take %70 of the course. For each course the students must take one intermediate and one final exam. Both the intermediate exam (measure tools like paper, quiz etc. could also be taken into consideration as intermediate exam point) and final exam contribute %50 to the grade of the course. All exams are evaluated over 100 points. The students have to get at least 40 points in the final exam. The students who receive the grades AA, BA, BB, CB and CC in a course are considered as successful. The grades DC and DD are considered as conditional successful. In order to be successful from the courses in which the grades DC and DD are received, the student’s grade point average has to be at least 2.0.

Graduation Requirements
In order to complete the program, all the courses which are available (240 ECTS) must be taken successfully and the grade point average must be at least 2.00 over 4.00.

Department of Philosophy at Uludag University has been continuing its training with the contributions of 5 professors, 3 associate professors, 2 assistant professor, 2 research assistants with doctorate degree, 2 research assistants (since 1990) together with doctorate and post graduate programs (from 2004); some of the research assistants within the body of Teaching Staff Training Program are already employed on that aim of giving education.
