General Description
Education and research in Immunology has a 30-year history at the Uludağ University. The Ph.D. Program in Immunology at Uludağ University developed in 1999 and was reorganized in 2005. The PhD Program in Immunology now has a total of 5 students. Over the past years, 3 students have graduated from our program.
The Immunology Program at Uludağ University Institute of Medical Sciences became the model of an integrated educational program in a growing discipline that now spans several of the classical fields of medical biology (microbiology, genetics, pathology, clinical medicine, biochemistry, etc.). It is noteworthy that students are combining a strong training in immunobiology with the basic aspects of biology.
The department offers the third cycle of higher education in terms of ECTS credits (180-240 credits awarding a Doctoral degree). After the successful completion of the program and fulfillment of requirements, a doctoral degree (PhD) in Immunology is awarded.

Specific Admission Requirements
To apply for a doctoral program;
- Candidates must hold a Master´s degree, or a degree in medicine, dentistry, veterinary medicine, or, for those with degrees in pharmacy and faculty of arts and sciences, an expert certificate in a department of laboratory as approved by Ministry of Health. A direct admission to the doctoral program with a Bachelor´s degree depends on specific requirements of the doctoral program.
- For health sciences, holders of Bachelor´s and Master´s degrees must possess ALES with the minimum acceptable score on sciences determined by the Senate.
- Those holding a degree in medicine must possess either an ALES score on sciences or TUS when applying for a doctoral program in basic medical sciences. Candidates must score at least 50 points in medical sciences when applying to the program with TUS. Those who have completed specialization are not required to possess ALES or TUS when applying for a doctoral program.
- Among foreign languages such as English, German, French, Italian, Russian and Arabic, and for foreign nationals, among languages such as English, German, and French, candidates must demonstrate proficiency in a language by satisfying one of the following exams; ÜDS, KPDS, TOEFL or equivalent approved by YOK, and provide the minimum acceptable score as approved by the Senate. Recognition of any other foreign language qualifications is dependent on the Senate.
- For foreign nationals, admission requirement shall be any of the following; Turkish Proficiency Exam by TOMER and corresponding ALES score, or scores in exams such as GRE or GMAT, accepted as internationally equivalent by YOK.
- Candidates for doctoral program must possess a minimum score of 55 points in ALES; 50 language points in UDS/KPDS/UUDS or equivalent for Master´s programs, and 55 language points in UDS/KPDS or equivalent for doctoral programs. For foreign nationals, a Document by TOMER certifying the knowledge of Turkish (except for those studying in Turkey) is accepted equivalent to the score of the exams approved by YOK as an equivalent language proficiency exam. Those applying for doctoral programs with TUS are required to possess a minimum score of 50 points in related field. Those who score below 60 points in overall performance are not admitted. In evaluation, the listed exams are responsible for the following percentages: TUS/ALES score 50%, Foreign Language 15%, GPA of Bachelor´s/Master´s degree 15%, interview 20%.
Specific Departmental requirements are higher then those set by the Institute.
1) Graduates of Medical, Veterinary or Dentistry Faculties; or Students who have satisfactorily completed a M.Sc. degree in Immunology, Microbiology, Biology, Medical Biology, Molecular Biology, Genetics, Medical Genetics, Molecular Genetics, Pathology, Pharmacolgy or Biotechnology may be accepted into the Ph.D. program.
2) Two (2) letters of recommendation.
5
Specific arrangements for the recognition of prior learning
The provisions in “Regulation on Transfer among Associate and Undergraduate Degree Programs, Double Major, and Subspecialty and the Principals of Credit Transfer among Institutions in Higher Education Institutions” are applied.
6
Qualification Requirements and Regulations
In order to obtain PhD degree in Immunology, the students are required to take the Doctoral Qualifying Examination, after having successfully completed taught courses. The examination consists of written and oral parts. Students must register for thesis work and the Specialization Field course offered by his supervisor every semester following the semester, in which the supervisor is appointed. Periodic monitoring of research work by a thesis monitoring committee is required to be awarded the PhD. A student who has completed work on the thesis within the time period, must write a thesis, using the data collected, according to the specifications of the Instiute of Health Sciences Writing Guide. The thesis must be defended in front of a thesis jury. A majority vote by the jury members determines the outcome of the thesis or examination. The vote can be for "acceptance", "rejection" or "correction". A student may be given, by a decision of the Administrative Committee of the Graduate School, up to six months to complete the corrections. The student must then retake the thesis examination.

Profile of The Programme
Immunology PhD Program aims to have students better equipped about basic, molecular and clinical immunology and applications of these. This program includes 4 compulsory and 10 elective courses which consist of advanced immunology topics and students can choose courses from other programs. Our program combines in basic biology, a advanced education in immunology, and exposure to the immunological and non-immunological problems of disease. The major goal of this program is to train scientists in investigative and academic medicine, preparing them to contribute to immunological research with a full awareness of the potential impact of immunology.

Occupational Profiles of Graduates With Examples
Ph.D. degree students generally continue their career in academia. They might also work in Research Centers of universities, R&D departments of industry and hospital. All of our three graduates carry on their carrier in academia.
10
Access to Further Studies
Graduates who succesfully completed PhD may apply to both in the same or related disciplines in higher education institutions at home or abroad to get a position in academic staff or to governmental R&D centres to get expert position.
11
Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading
The exams of the courses can be done written, written-oral or applied. In order to take the tests of the postgraduate programs, the attendance of the courses is required to be at least 70% or 80%. The exams are evaluated by over 100points awarded. To be successful, at master with thesis and master without thesis programs, it is required to get at least 70 points out of 100 points; at doctorate and proficiency in art programs it is required to get at least 75 points out of 100 points.
Within the frame of the principals mentioned above, to evaluate the points as letter grades; getting AA, BA, BB, CB and CC at master degree and scientific preparation programs, and AA,BA, BB and CB at doctorate programs are considered successful at the courses.
At postgraduate programs, a student failed at any course can take the exams at the end of the semester even if the course is not opened up the following semester. The student failed at this exam on the ground of absence or not carrying out the preconditions of the lesson repeats the lesson when it is opened up. If the lesson is subtracted or not opened up, an equivalent lesson to it is determined by the suggestion of the concerned head of department and by the decision of the board. Under these circumstances, the student is responsible of the equivalent lesson instead of the lesson that s/he needs to repeat.
The adjustment of the grades of the students who practice upon the national or international student Exchange programs like Erasmus and Farabi are executed by the decision of the board and the decision by the institution directory. These grades are recorded to the academic transcript.
The academic standing of the student is determined at the end of every semester on the term grade point averages and general grade point averages that is calculated on the coefficients given as the letter grades according to the concerned regulations.
Term grade point averages and general grade point averages are calculated by the grade point averages. Grade point average (GPA) is calculated by the division of the total credits to the total out of the multiplication of the course credits and letter grades’s equivalents. GPA is calculated as two digits after the comma.
Both term grade point average and general grade point average are determined by the grades of the courses from AA to FF.
All of the grades are recorded to the academic transcript.
