Brief History
Department of Sociology at the University of Uludağ began undergraduate education in the 1990-1991 semester year. First students graduated in 1994. Since 1996 Fall Semester, MA in Sociology is awarded by our department. Board of Higher Education approved PhD granting status of the Department in 2007. In addition, between 2001 and 2010, English preparatory year was elective for our students, and teaching in English was a part of a third of the curriculum. Currently, our faculty consists of two full professors, one assistant professor, two PhD holding lecturers, and eight research assistants.

Qualification Awarded
Students will be awarded, on successful completion of the programme and gain competencies B.A. degree in Sociology and are entitled to use the title of Sociologist per Turkish occupational law.

Specific Admission Requirements
Students must comply with the legal and academic requirements to attend Uludağ University Department of Sociology according to the selection processes established by the ÖSYM (Higher Education Council Student Selection and Placement Centre) regulations. Students who have started studies in other universities within or outside of the country may apply for the recognition of their respective diplomas. The recognition of previous diplomas is done separately for each student and the procedure must be fulfilled out by YÖK (Board of Higher Education) accordingly before the start of each academic year. More information about general admission requirements can be found in the university and YÖK (Board of Higher Education) catalogues. Under the established exchange program approved by the University, exchange students from abroad may be accepted for studies exclusively for the courses taught in English. If the interested student is competent in Turkish, he/she may then enroll any courses, running in Turkish. A list of courses taught each semester can be found at the Course Structure diagram, as well as the department web site.

Specific arrangements for the recognition of prior learning
The provisions in “Regulation on Transfer among Associate and Undergraduate Degree Programs, Double Major, and Subspecialty and the Principals of Credit Transfer among Institutions in Higher Education Institutions” are applied.

Qualification Requirements and Regulations
This is a first cycle degree program in the science of Sociology (240 ECTS). For students to successfully graduate from this program, students have to successfully take and pass all the compulsory and elective courses (a total of 240 ECTS) and have a Cumulative Grade Point Average of 2.00 out of possible 4.00.

Profile of The Programme
Graduated students of this department can be sociology, logic and psychology teacher in public and private schools after master program without thesis.
Upon a successful completion of the programme, student may continue with master and doctoral studies in the same or similar scientific areas, which may accept students from the science of Sociology.

Key Learning Outcomes & Classified & Comparative
1. To enable to gain an understanding of fundamental and classical sociology and harness this understanding in a comparative and open interpretation of the contemporary world.
2. To enable to follow novel global trends and developments in social sciences, and critically engage with these thoughts.
3. To enable to use Turkish and at least one other foreign language proficiently in interpersonal communication.
4. To enable to express one´s ideas in written language, draft and develop a line of argument in written form and critically engage with other written texts.
5. To enable mutual respect, understanding, tolerance, empathy, and resourcefulness amongst a wide array of social strata and global cultures.
6. To engender an inquisitive mind that is capable of developing research questions and design and undertake a social research on account of her skills gained during undergraduate study.
7. To enable skill sets necessary for engaging in team work, to communicate and respond to the needs of her fellow workers in harmony with the needs of the tasks required.
8. To engender conducting archival research by dint of printed library resources as well as information society´s new tools.
9. To engender an in-depth understanding of social relations, historical developments, social forces, and social questions both in national and international contexts.
10. To raise an awareness of ethical issues surrounding sociological research and equip with necessary social responsibility both in terms of occupational requirements and civic duties.
11. To enable an inquisitive mind that is self-reflective and conversant with the canonical texts of social sciences, philosophy, and world literature.

Occupational Profiles of Graduates With Examples
Our graduates can find employment as secondary grade school teachers in Philosophy in public and private schools, as professional social researchers, social consultants, human resources managers, copy writers and account specialists in advertisement, script writers and assistant producers in film-making, both in public and private sectors.

Access to Further Studies
Students with a successful degree in Sociology can apply for post-graduate education granted that they received 55 pts. in ALES examination.

Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading
For students to be in good academic standing and continue regular registration each semester at least 70% of class attendance is compulsory, and each student should enroll for classes at beginning of the semester. For all courses the department teaches, students will have a mid-term exam and a final exam each semester. The mid-term exam and the final exam each have a weight of 50% to the final grade. All exams are graded on a 100 pts. basis. To get a passing grade, students have to get 40 pts. from the mid-term exam. AA, BA, BB, CB, and CC letter grades indicate passing grades. DC and DD letter grades are conditional passing grades: insofar as one’s Cumulative Grade Point Average passes 2.00 she/he is accepted as passing from these conditionally graded courses. Otherwise, in the case that her CGPA falls below 2.00, she will be accepted failed from these courses.

Graduation Requirements
In order to be able to successfully complete the program, students have to pass all curricular courses (equivalent to 240 ECTS), have 2.00 Cumulative Grade Point Average out of a possible 4.00, and write and defend a graduation thesis under the supervision of their professors.
