Integrated Ph.D. in Chemistry
General Description
The Department of Chemistry was established in 1983 within the Faculty of Science and Letters at Bursa Uludağ University, with the aim of providing education and research in five separate branches: Analytical, Inorganic, Physical Chemistry, Organic, and Biochemistry. The department completed its first year in the 1983-1984 academic year in the Faculty of Education building in Yıldırım district of Bursa. In the 1984-1985 academic year, the department moved to its current building in the Görükle campus of Bursa Uludağ University, comprising blocks A and B, where it will continue its educational and research activities in the following years. As of the 2017-2018 academic year, it continues its education, teaching, and research activities on the 3rd floor of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences Science Departments building. It has 13 Professors, 11 Associate Professors, 1 PhD Research Assistant, 4 Research Assistants, and 1 Chemist in the Analytical, Inorganic, Physical Chemistry, Organic, and Biochemistry departments. The program aims to train individuals who meet the requirements specified in the B.U. Graduate Education and Training Regulations to become Doctors of Chemistry, possessing the ability to access and evaluate information through scientific research in one of the following branches of Chemistry: Analytical Chemistry, Inorganic Chemistry, Biochemistry, Physical Chemistry, and Organic Chemistry.
This program is subject to the first-stage degree system in Chemistry, with 300 ECTS credits. Upon successful completion of the program and fulfillment of program requirements, a PhD in Chemistry is awarded.

Specific Admission Requirements
Candidates must have the following qualifications for the specified fields:
1- A Master´s degree,
2- A passing score on the Graduate Entrance Examination (ALES), and
3- A passing score on a foreign language exam (IELTS, TOEFL, YDS, YÖKDİL, E/TEP, etc.).

Specific arrangements for the recognition of prior learning
The provisions in “Regulation on Transfer among Associate and Undergraduate Degree Programs, Double Major, and Subspecialty and the Principals of Credit Transfer among Institutions in Higher Education Institutions” are applied.

Qualification Requirements and Regulations
To obtain a doctorate in chemistry, students must take all courses offered in the doctoral program (equivalent to 300 ECTS credits), successfully complete all courses, and achieve a weighted grade point average of at least 75 out of 100. Additionally, students must pass a doctoral qualifying examination (oral and written) administered by expert faculty members in the relevant field, achieving a minimum grade point average of 75, and successfully defend their thesis in a related area before a selected jury. These students are then awarded a doctorate in chemistry.

Profile of The Programme
PhD programme takes 4 to 6 years to complete. Generally in the first and second years, students take some compulsory and elective courses related to the area. Students who successfully passed the proficiency exams are expected to develop an original PhD project with the help of advisor and to carry out the project-orientated practical works. Students whom prepared and defended their thesis successfully with 120 ECTS get PhD degree. The aim of the PhD program is to provide the following: surveying the literature over a specific field, planning and executing experimental works in a timely manner, compiling and evaluating experimental results, writing and presenting scientific reports.

Occupational Profiles of Graduates With Examples
Graduates (PhD) can work in industrial organizations or private sectors, as a specialist researcher or technical manager, such as in petrochemical, pharmaceutical, cosmetic, iron and steel, automotive, food, textile, mining, etc. or as a quality-controller. Besides, as academics working in faculties or institutes.

Access to Further Studies
The student who completed succesfully to this program can work in the area of chemistry science or in the areas that accept lecturers from this area.

Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading
Attendance is mandatory for all courses, with a minimum of 70%. Students who meet the attendance requirement are eligible to take the end-of-term exam. Students take an end-of-term exam for each course. The end-of-term exam contributes 100% to the final grade (scores from assignments, practical work, etc., may also be considered). All exams are graded out of 100 points. A minimum end-of-term average of 75 is required. Students must also achieve a minimum average of 75 on the doctoral qualifying exam (oral and written) administered by expert faculty members in the relevant field. Furthermore, students must successfully complete their thesis work and receive a passing grade on the thesis defense exam administered by the thesis defense committee.

Graduation Requirements
To successfully complete the program, students must pass all courses offered in the program (equivalent to 300 ECTS credits), successfully defend their thesis in a relevant field before a selected jury, and fulfill the graduation requirements within the scope of their thesis.

Our department provides educational services with 13 Professors, 11 Associate Professors, 1 PhD Research Assistant, 4 Research Assistants, and 1 chemist. The department has 4 classrooms, each equipped with air conditioning and projection devices. The department has active sub-departments of Inorganic, Analytical, Organic, Biochemistry, and Physical Chemistry, each with its own student and research laboratories. In addition, there are 2 chemistry laboratories (general chemistry student laboratories) in the central classroom building. Our department is equipped with the following equipment for characterizing chemical substances: GC-MS, GC-MS/MS, GC-FID, HPLC-DAD, FT-IR, FAAS, GFAAS, UV-VIS, contact angle measuring device, and surface plasma resonance (SPR) spectrometer.
