General Description

Brief History
English Language Teaching program of the Foreign Languages Teaching Department was established in 1982 within the body of Uludağ University Faculty of Education within the scope of new restructuring. Our English Language Teaching M.A. program has started in 1992 as a part of the Institute of Social Sciences and continues its education on our University’s Görükle campus since 1996. During the 2011-2012 academic year it has become a part of the Institute of Educational Sciences and has evolved and developed according to the global standards and needs of the era. With its outstanding faculty members, our program aims at helping its students, who wants to be academic researchers, or develop themselves to gain a scientific understanding, occupational knowledge, skills, and qualifications.
Students enrolled in English Language Teaching M.A. program need to successfully accomplish 24 credits in courses related to applied linguistics and methodology in addition to a no-credit seminar course. 20 percent of courses that requires academic expertise constitute social sciences and other scientific fields. Students, who complete the courses successfully, are required to prepare a thesis under the supervision of an advisor during the successive two semesters.

Qualification Awarded
This program is contingent upon 120 ECTS credits, second level degree system in higher education in the field of English language teaching. On condition that the program is completed successfully, one possesses an M.A. degree in English Language Teaching.

Specific Admission Requirements
1.A graduation diploma either from English Language Teaching Department of a Faculty of Education or English/American Language and Literature Department of a Faculty of Letters, 2.Receiving the required points from the Selection Examination for Academic and Graduate Studies (ALES), 3.A documentation of their foreign language level, which is identified as 80, from Interuniversity Foreign Language Examination (ÜDS) or Foreign Language Proficiency Examination for State Employees (KPDS).

Specific arrangements for the recognition of prior learning
The provisions in “Regulation on Transfer among Associate and Undergraduate Degree Programs, Double Major, and Subspecialty and the Principals of Credit Transfer among Institutions in Higher Education Institutions” are applied.

Qualification Requirements and Regulations
To receive an M.A. diploma from the field of English Language Teaching students have to fulfill the following requirements; 1.Taking courses, equivalent of 24 credits (60 AKTS), during the first two terms of the initial year and completing the courses successfully, 2.Receiving a GPA of 70 over a total of 100, 3.Completing the Seminar (thesis) and Specialized Field Topic courses along with the preparations for writing a thesis as an equivalent of 60 AKTS and thus, completing a total of 120 AKTS, 4.Defending the thesis successfully in front of an elected jury.

Profile of The Programme
The aim of the English Language Teaching (ELT) graduate program of the Foreign Languages Education Department is to train qualified science persons, who are creative and can conduct research on the grounds of human rights and ethical values; have internalized the principles of the modern information society; can produce and implement knowledge related to the field of ELT; develop themselves continuously and follow scientific innovations of their day and age; can conduct basic and applied authentic scientific research in the fields of ‘applied linguistics’ and ‘methodology’; possess analytical and critical thinking skills; and have developed interactional skills at the international level.
With its outstanding academic staff and physical infrastructure, our program can carry out various functions such as conducting scientific, authentic, theoretical and/or applied research related to ELT; preparing students who would like to continue their occupation in an academic environment as science persons in the field of linguistics and methodology; fulfilling its responsibility for the community within global standards.

Key Learning Outcomes & Classified & Comparative
1. To improve and deepen theoretical and applied fund of knowledge in ‘applied linguistics’ and ‘methodology’ based on the undergraduate qualifications in the field of ELT,
2. To learn about the stages of data collection, data analysis, and publishing related to their field of study on scientific and ethical grounds,
3. To posses the knowledge about teaching programs, the ability to seek information via modern methods and techniques, as well as the language skills necessary for generating knowledge at the highest level,
4. To find solutions to problems that require expertise via quantitative and qualitative research methods,
5. To develop solutions to a problem in their field by independent planning and implementing the results by evaluating them,
6. To evaluate information, gathered via theoretical and practical methods during the academic learning process, by using cause and effect relationships,
7. To develop the skills necessary for interdisciplinary interaction and produce new and functional information by synthesizing it,
8. To follow international literature and contribute to it with scientific research of their own,
9. To use information and communication technologies, relevant computer software, and Internet resources to increase the quality of language learning,
10. To use English at the C2 level of European Language Portfolio, in order to present their academic studies in ELT at the national and international level,
11. To develop a positive attitude for sustainable development, determine personal and occupational goals related to ELT, look for opportunities and use research methods and techniques necessary for further career development,
12. To exhibit proper conduct related to democracy, human rights, social, scientific, and academic ethical values both in the learning contexts and society.

Occupational Profiles of Graduates With Examples
In private and government schools of the Ministry of National Education as expert teachers, -In institutions such as Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Culture, and others related with public relations, -In private sector related with media, industry, and commerce, -In universities as research academicians by enrolling in Ph.D. programs of the related fields.

Access to Further Studies
Candidates who complete their undergraduate education successfully can continue their education in graduate Ph.D. programs on condition that they receive the required points from ALES (Selection Examination for Academic and Graduate Studies) and foreign language exams (Interuniversity Foreign Language Examination (ÜDS) or Foreign Language Proficiency Examination for State Employees (KPDS)).

Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading
It is applied in accordance with the 32nd article of the Associate and Undergraduate Education Regulations taken by the BUU senate decision.

Graduation Requirements
In order to successfully complete the program, it is necessary to pass all the courses available in the program (equivalent to 240 ECTS), obtain a GPA of at least 2.0 out of 4.00, and successfully complete the graduation thesis.

Facilities
The program performs its function with 5 professors, 3 associate professors, 6 assistant professors, 5 instructors and 1 research assistants in its classrooms some have interactive white boards, and in two multimedia supported language learning classrooms.
University Central library and faculty’s library are open to both students and faculty members’ use.
