Horticulture
General Description

Brief History
Horticulture Department being the first founded department in Agricultural Faculty at Uludag University in 1981, graduate education started after 1983, and since then the "PhD" training from the "Major Field Horticulture" is operating. Major field of fruit, vegetable, viticulture, floriculture growing and breeding are given in the Horticulture Department. Horticulture Department possesses vineyard, orchard, vegetable field, glass and plastic greenhouses, cold storage and packing facilities. In addition, tissue culture, physiology, molecular biology, cytology, or postharvest physiology laboratories are used for scientific research.

Qualification Awarded
Horticulture program is subjected to 180-240 ECTS credits and eighth stage degree system in higher education. The Doctorate (Ph. D.) Degree in Horticulture Program is awarded to the graduates who have successfully completed all courses in the curriculum.

Specific Admission Requirements
Master school certificate is required. Application to the PD program with master certificate depends on conformity condition of PHD. Candidates- must have science base ALES score determined by Uludag University Senate. Students must have UDS, TOEFL, TOEFL or equivalent examinations accepted by YOK whose minimum score determined by Senate in languages of English, German, French, Italian, Russian and Arabic, for foreign students in English, German, French languages. UU Senate decides the Equivalence of other foreign language documents. For foreign candidates, Tomer candidates Turkish competency given by TOMER and ALES exam results or GRE, GMAT and other exams which are by YOK in international level.

Specific arrangements for the recognition of prior learning
The provisions in “Regulation on Transfer among Associate and Undergraduate Degree Programs, Double Major, and Subspecialty and the Principals of Credit Transfer among Institutions in Higher Education Institutions” are applied.

Qualification Requirements and Regulations
The program provided a total of not less than 24-30 local credits, a qualifying examination, thesis proposal, thesis and dissertation defense consists of the presentation. Consists of compulsory and elective courses in graduate courses. 180-240 ECTS total number of credits of the program. In order to be successful in the course concerned that this notice at least 75 out of 100, which are mandatory, but non-credit Development and Learning, Instructional Planning and Evaluation and Research Methods courses must be taken. Students who have the relevant conditions are awarded to Doctoral in Horticulture

Profile of The Programme
To carry out researches in the area of growing fruits, vegetables, grapes, and ornamental plants growing and breeding, and provide qualified education to individuals who may have sufficient experience in this context, create contemporary solutions to problems, leadership structure and serve at international standard.
Two seminars with no credits are required in curriculum, one is at the end of courses and the other is at the end of a thesis plan in the Department of Horticulture. After a successful completion of the courses and PhD qualification exam (written and oral) Subject of the thesis is determined by the Department Academic Council after successful completion of courses and the first seminar approved. The thesis must be successfully defended in front of a jury selected.

1. Improves the level of expertise in the field and advances to-date information in original thinking and / or research, innovation in the field that will deepen and reach the original definitions depending on the Master of Science level qualifications on the basis of Horticulture (Fruit, Vegetable Growing, Viticulture and Ornamental Plants).
2. Evaluates the current knowledge in the field of Horticulture by systematic approach and uses.
3. Generate alternative solutions to the problems that may occur in the field of Horticulture.
4. Contributes to the field horticulture by submitting publications prepared by results of theoretical and practical research with an interdisciplinary approach at national and international levels.
5. Gains ability to evaluate and present his/her finding information in the field of Horticulture at national and international panels.
6. Defends his/her own views on the discussion of the issues with experts in the field of Horticulture and effectively communicates to show competence in the field.
7. Gains ability to monitor developments in the field of horticultural subjects at national and international levels.
8. Becomes a guiding person to producers and industrial companies due to the necessity of continuous improvement
9. Develop positive attitudes toward lifelong learning with the knowledge and skills acquired in the field of Horticulture.

Contributes to the solution of encountered problems of social, scientific, cultural and ethical values related to the field of Horticulture issues and supports the development.

Access to Further Studies
Graduates who successfully completed doctorate degree may apply to both in the same or related disciplines in higher education institutions at home or abroad to get a position in academic staff or to governmental R&D centers to get expert position.

Graduation Requirements
Students must successfully pass all compulsory and elective courses on the program (equivalent to a total of 18-240 ECTS) mention about "Qualification Requirements and Regulations". And who have successfully completed all courses in the curriculum will be given The Doctorate Degree in Horticulture Program.

Facilities
Currently there are 6 Professors, 5 Associate Professors and 2 Research Assistants in the Horticulture Department. The Horticulture Department has vineyard-fruit-vegetable areas, glass and plastic greenhouses, cold storage and packaging facilities to be used in cultivation and research. In addition, it has tissue culture, physiology, molecular biology, cytology and post-harvest physiology laboratories that scientific studies and undergraduate and graduate students can use for their thesis studies.
