General Description

Brief History
Uludag University, Institute of Health Sciences, doctoral program of Veterinary Animal Nutrition and Nutritional Diseases began to provide the doctoral education in 1988. In this program, 17 students were awarded the title of doctor of philosophy (PhD) in field of animal nutrition and nutritional diseases by completing the doctoral program since 1988.

Qualification Awarded
The department offers the third cycles of higher education in terms of ECTS credits (180-240 credits awarding a Doctoral degree). After the successful completion of the program and fulfillment of requirements, a doctoral degree in animal nutrition and nutritional diseases is awarded.

Specific Admission Requirements
To apply for a doctoral program; -Candidates must hold a bachelor degree in Veterinary Medicine to apply for PhD Program of Veterinary Animal Nutrition and Nutritional Diseases in Uludag University. -Candidates, who has a bachelor degree in national or abroad Faculties of Veterinary Medicine which are accepted by Yüksek Öğretim Kurulu – YÖK (The Council of Higher Education), are required to have the base score of ALES for numerical point type which is determined by Senate of Uludag University. - Among foreign languages such as English, German, French, candidates must demonstrate proficiency in a language by satisfying one of the following exams; ÜDS (Interuniversity Foreign Language Examination), KPDS (Foreign Language Proficiency Examination for State Employees), TOEFL or equivalent approved by YÖK (The Council of Higher Education), or the proficiency exam carried out by Uludag University School of Foreign Languages, and provide the minimum acceptable score as approved by the Senate. Recognition of any other foreign language qualifications is dependent on the Senate. - For foreign candidates, admission requirement shall be any of the following; Turkish Proficiency Exam by TÖMER and corresponding ALES score, or scores in exams such as GRE or GMAT, accepted as internationally equivalent by YÖK. - Candidates for doctoral program must possess a minimum score of 55 points in ALES and 55 language points in ÜDS/KPDS or equivalent. For foreign candidates, a Document by TÖMER certifying the knowledge of Turkish (except for those studying in Turkey) is accepted equivalent to the score of the exams approved by YÖK as an equivalent language proficiency exam. In evaluation, the listed exams are responsible for the following percentages: ALES score 50%, Foreign Language 15%, GPA of Bachelor´s 15%, interview 20%. Those who score below 60 points in overall performance are not admitted.

Specific arrangements for the recognition of prior learning
The provisions in “Regulation on Transfer among Associate and Undergraduate Degree Programs, Double Major, and Subspecialty and the Principals of Credit Transfer among Institutions in Higher Education Institutions” are applied.

Qualification Requirements and Regulations
In order to apply for a PhD in Veterinary Animal Nutrition and Nutritional Diseases, national or abroad whose equivalence is accepted by the Yüksek Öğretim Kurulu – YÖK (The Council of Higher Education) should be a graduate of veterinary faculties. To get degree of PhD, students must take successfully complete all the required courses which are common and necessary in the field, in order achieve a common and, each course must take at least 75 out of 100. As mandatory courses in the Institute, 7.5 credit Biostatistics and the non-credit courses Development and Learning and Instructional Planning and Evaluation should be taken and achieved.

Profile of The Programme
The aim of this program is graduated a doctoral degree who are having the level of expertise knowledge about Animal Nutrition and Nutritional Diseases, following current developments and literature in this field, planning and performing international projects. The students in the doctoral program were aimed for having a comprehensive knowledge about nutritional biochemistry and physiology, diagnosis in nutritional diseases, prevention and treatment, feeds, feed additives, feed evaluation by the animals, feed technology, ration balancing, and feeding animals to increase performance in livestock animals.

1. To have ability of effective use of Turkish language in written and oral communication, and to have foreign language for searching international literature and for establishing the communication.

3. Owns interdisciplinary knowledge related to his/her work area based on attainments at the level of veterinary medicine
4. Owns theoretical and practical knowledge in the field of methodology and scientific research at the level of carrying out an independent research.
5. Develops original ideas for required issues related to it’s own work area by using the basic information at the level of veterinary medicine and owns knowledge to develop original product by examining these ideas
6. Performs experted laboratory ration balancing (etc) skills by using obtained theoretical and practical information at the level of expertise in his/her educational area and has the ability to create solutions for the difficulties in self work area.
7. Has the ability to design and develop the scientific method for an advanced/ recently identified problem related to his/her work area also has ability to use and develop sector-specific new/modern technology by systematic and critical approach at the level of expertise.
8. Plans an interdisciplinary scientific research and organizes a squad to create solutions for known/has just been an identified issue. Conducts and concludes projects with a team consciousness.

Shares knowledge in fields of personal education by attending conferences, panels, symposiums, workshops, seminars, the article discussion hours, the problem solving sessions etc.. and establishes the relations with the experts in the other disciplines by attending to the organizations and contributes to the solution.
10. Expands the limits of scientific information by publishing a scientific article about his/her own personal field in international or national journals with juries.
11. Manages the actions for solution suggestions (when required or just for information) and defines the problem in authorized commissions about public and animal health by using the education information.

Occupational Profiles of Graduates With Examples
This program’s graduates are able to work as an academic member or lecturer in national or abroad universities, staff in Ministry of Food Agriculture and Livestock, a director or specialist in feed additive and medicine companies and public or business sector’s laboratories, feed industry, macroscale and / or entegrated cattle, sheep / goat, horse and poultry. In addition, the graduates may work as a veterinarian in mentioned above fields.

Access to Further Studies
The entrance into postgraduate doctoral studies is possible for candidates who graduated from a veterinary faculty, and can provide ALES with a passing grade and meet foreign language qualifications.

Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading
The exams of the courses can be done written, written-oral or applied. In order to take the tests of the postgraduate programs, the attendance of the courses is required to be at least 70% (theorical) or 80% (practical). To be successful, at doctorate and proficiency in art programs it is required to get at least 75 points out of 100 points. Within the frame of the principals mentioned above, to evaluate the points as letter grades; getting AA, BA, BB, CB and CC at master degree and scientific preparation programs, and AA, BA, BB and CB at doctorate programs are considered successful at the courses. At postgraduate programs, a student failed at any course can take the exams at the end of the semester even if the course is not opened up the following semester. The student failed at this exam on the ground of absence or not carrying out the preconditions of the lesson repeats the lesson when it is opened up. If the lesson is subtracted or not opened up, an equivalent lesson to it is determined by the suggestion of the concerned head of department and by the decision of the board. Under these circumstances, the student is responsible of the equivalent lesson instead of the lesson that s/he needs to repeat. The adjustment of the grades of the students who practice upon the national or international student Exchange programs like Erasmus and Farabi are executed by the decision of the board and the decision by the institution directory. These grades are recorded to the academic transcript. The academic standing of the student is determined at the end of every semester on the term grade point averages and general grade point averages that is calculated on the coefficients given as the letter grades according to the concerned regulations. Term grade point averages and general grade point averages are calculated by the grade point averages. Grade point average (GPA) is calculated by the division of the total credits to the total out of the multiplication of the course credits and letter grades’s equivalents. GPA is calculated as two digits after the comma. Both term grade point average and general grade point average are determined by the grades of the courses from AA to FF. All of the grades are recorded to the academic transcript.

Graduation Requirements
Doctorate program is formed by at least eight courses providing that they are not less than 24 credits and more than 30 credits, one seminar at course and dissertation stage, proficiency test, thesis suggestion, thesis study, thesis exam and the publications stated at the regulation’s 44th article’s second subsection. The thesis should have one of the following features: novelty to science, developing a new scientific method or applying a known method to a new branch. It should be published as the full text at an international index scientific journal. The name of the doctorate student may not be the first one. The publication of the candidate who is going to take the argument of the doctorate should be about the doctorate thesis or the branch s/he is doing doctorate.

Facilities
In this department, 2 Professor, 3 Associate Professor, 1 Asistant Professor, 2 Research Asistants work as academic staff. The department has good experimental animal research center and a laboratory. These research center and lab are well equipped with facilities for teaching and research needs. The program’s students may take courses from different graduate programs. The students in this program are able to perform chemical nutrient analysis of feeds, some in vitro and in situ experiments, volatile fatty acid analysis in ruminal fluid, some blood biochemical parameters analysis, evaluation of meat and egg chemical quality parameters. Also, PhD program students are able to take advantages of Research and Application Farm located in Uludag University, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine which includes dairy cattle, beef cattle, sheep, goat, laying hens, broiler and quail units.
