Medical Blood Banking and Transfusion
General Description
The M.Sc. Program in Blood Banking and Transfusion Medicine at Uludağ University Graduate Shool Of Health Science is being conducted since 2003. Over the past years, 2 students have graduated from our program.
This programme aims to develop your interest, knowledge and understanding of the theory, practical techniques and research relating to the science of Blood Banking and Transfusion Medicine.
This programme is primarily intended for medical doctors and aims to provide an in-depth understanding of the science, regulations and international practices in the field of transfusion medicine for those aiming for more senior management roles in healthcare organisations.
The department offers the second cycle of higher education in terms of ECTS credits (90-120 credits, awarding a Master´s degree). After the successful completion of the program and fulfillment of requirements, Blood Banking and Transfusion Medicine Program graduates are awarded Master of Science (MSc) degree.

- Candidates for Master´s program must possess a minimum score of 55 points in ALES; 50 language points in ÜDS/KPDS/UÜDS or equivalent for Master´s program. For foreign nationals, a Document by TÖMER certifying the knowledge of Turkish (except for those studying in Turkey) is accepted equivalent to the score of the exams approved by YÖK as an equivalent language proficiency exam. In evaluation, the listed exams are responsible for the following percentages: TUS/ALES score 50%, Foreign Language 15%, GPA of Bachelor´s degree 15%, interview 20%.
-Specific Departmental requirements are higher then those set by the Institute:
1) Graduates of Medical Faculty will be accepted into the M.Sc. Program.
2) Two (2) letters of recommendation.

Specific arrangements for the recognition of prior learning
The provisions in “Regulation on Transfer among Associate and Undergraduate Degree Programs, Double Major, and Subspecialty and the Principals of Credit Transfer among Institutions in Higher Education Institutions” are applied.

Qualification Requirements and Regulations
Regulations of Institute for Qualification Requirements published in Institute web page (http://saglikbilimleri.uludag.edu.tr/en/) are valid for Blood Banking and Transfusion Medicine MSc program. Briefly, a student may take courses consisted of compulsory and elective lectures. The MSc students are required to take the Qualifying Examination, after having successfully completed taught courses. The examination consists of written and oral parts. Students must register for thesis work and the Specialization Field course offered by his supervisor every semester following the semester, in which the supervisor is appointed. Periodic monitoring of research work by a thesis monitoring committee is required to be awarded the MSc. A student who has completed work on the thesis within the time period, must write a thesis, using the data collected, according to the specifications of the Instiute of Health Sciences Writing Guide. The thesis must be defended in front of a thesis jury. A majority vote by the jury members determines the outcome of the thesis or examination. The vote can be for "acceptance", "rejection" or "correction". A student may be given, by a decision of the Administrative Committee of the Graduate School, up to six months to complete the corrections. The student must then retake the thesis examination.

Profile of The Programme
Blood Banking and Transfusion Medicine MSc program aims to have students better equipped about transfusion medicine from basic science concepts to the regulations and quality systems required. Principles of basic immunology and red blood cell physiology are investigated and applied to blood group serology. The program includes an in-depth look at the regulations and accreditations governing the field of transfusion medicine, management of blood bank and also an introduction to quality management systems and how they apply to blood collection, component preparation, donor laboratory testing and patient laboratory testing. Provides an overview of principles of research and an introduction to preparing for oral and written presentation.
This program includes 7 compulsory and 5 elective courses which consist of a multidisciplinary area. The major goal of this program is to train scientists in investigative and academic medicine, preparing them to contribute to research with a full awareness of the potential impact of transfusion medicine.

Access to Further Studies
The entrance into postgraduate doctoral studies is possible for candidates who have successfully earned a Master´s degree, and can provide ALES with a passing grade and meet foreign language qualifications.
11
Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading
The exams of the courses can be done written, written-oral or applied. In order to take the tests of the postgraduate programs, the attendance of the courses is required to be at least 70% or 80%. The exams are evaluated by over 100 points awarded. To be successful, at master with thesis program, it is required to get at least 70 points out of 100 points.
Within the frame of the principals mentioned above, to evaluate the points as letter grades; getting AA, BA, BB, CB and CC at master degree and scientific preparation programs are considered successful at the courses.
At postgraduate programs, a student failed at any course can take the exams at the end of the semester even if the course is not opened up the following semester. The student failed at this exam on the ground of absence or not carrying out the preconditions of the lesson repeats the lesson when it is opened up. If the lesson is subtracted or not opened up, an equivalent lesson to it is determined by the suggestion of the concerned head of department and by the decision of the board. Under these circumstances, the student is responsible of the equivalent lesson instead of the lesson that s/he needs to repeat.
The adjustment of the grades of the students who practice upon the national or international student Exchange programs like Erasmus and Farabi are executed by the decision of the board and the decision by the institution directory. These grades are recorded to the academic transcript.
The academic standing of the student is determined at the end of every semester on the term grade point averages and general grade point averages that is calculated on the coefficients given as the letter grades according to the concerned regulations.
Term grade point averages and general grade point averages are calculated by the grade point averages. Grade point average (GPA) is calculated by the division of the total credits to the total out of the multiplication of the course credits and letter grades’s equivalents. GPA is calculated as two digits after the comma.
Both term grade point average and general grade point average are determined by the grades of the courses from AA to FF.
All of the grades are recorded to the academic transcript.
12
Graduation Requirements
Master with thesis program is formed by seven courses providing that they are not less than 21 credits and more than 28 credits, one seminar at course and dissertation stage, thesis study and thesis exam. Despite not needing scientific preparation program, the student can take up graduation level courses if the supervisor thinks it is needed, and these courses’ credits will not be counted.
