General Description
1
Brief History
Department of Pathology of UU Institute of Health Sciences offers PhD training as part of the postgraduate program. The graduates are entitled "PhD of Pathology". During the PhD training the students are expected to define and diagnose diseases macroscopically and microscopically, inquire information about disease development, and to be able to give diagnosis independently. They are also required to have a multidimensional oversight about problems and collect multidisciplinary information. The students are expected to follow the developing biotechnology and apply biotechnological diagnostic methods. The students have to follow recent developments in pathology, to follow literature, to plan scientific projects in their field of interest and take part in the ongoing projects of the department. The students improve their literature review, seminar preparation and presentation skills by presenting a literature review and a seminar each semester.

Qualification Awarded
The department offers the the third cycles of higher education in terms of ECTS credits (180-240 credits awarding a Doctoral degree). After the successful completion of the program and fulfillment of requirements, a doctoral degree in Pathology is awarded.

Those who score below 60 points in overall performance are not admitted. In evaluation, the listed exams are responsible for the following percentages: TUS/ALES score 50%, Foreign Language 15%, GPA of Bachelor’s/Master’s degree 15%, interview 20%.

Specific arrangements for the recognition of prior learning
The provisions in “Regulation on Transfer among Associate and Undergraduate Degree Programs, Double Major, and Subspecialty and the Principals of Credit Transfer among Institutions in Higher Education Institutions” are applied.
6
Qualification Requirements and Regulations
For the PhD degree, the student has to pass all field and common compulsory courses by receiving at least 75/100 from each course. Institute compulsory courses are Biostatistics (7.5 ECTS), Development and Learning (no credits), and Planning and Assessing in Teaching (no credits). The students has to gain a total of 32.5 ECTS from the field compulsory courses Necropsy Principles, Sampling and Fixation Techniques; Material Sampling, Sectioning and Staining Techniques; Cell Development Disorders, Diseases and Pathology at Cellular Level; Inflammation, Healing and Repair; Pathology of Urinary System Diseases; Digestive System Pathology; Nature and Causes of Diseases: Host, Agent and Environment Interactions.
7
Profile of The Programme
During the PhD training, students learn how to gain correct and fast information and how to apply this information to practice. In order to develop investigative character and hand skills, they are expected to take part in experimental studies of the department. Students get courses from other departments to have a wider scientific perspective and to have a multidimensional approach to topics. As a PhD graduate, the student is expected to carry superior skills regarding knowledge level, abilities, scientific understanding.

Occupational Profiles of Graduates With Examples
Research institutes and universities, Animal diseases diagnostic centers, Biotechnology industry, Veterinary drugs and vaccine production industry, Private and official clinics, faculty animal clinics and hospitals diagnostic laboratories
10
Access to Further Studies
The entrance into postgraduate doctoral studies is possible for candidates who have successfully earned a Bachelor’s degree, and can provide ALES with a passing grade and meet foreign language qualifications.
11
Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading
The exams of the courses can be done written, written-oral or applied. In order to take the tests of the postgraduate programs, the attendance of the courses is required to be at least 70% or 80%. The exams are evaluated by over 100 points awarded. To be successful, at master with thesis and master without thesis programs, it is required to get at least 70 points out of 100 points; at doctorate and proficiency in art programs it is required to get at least 75 points out of 100 points. Within the frame of the principals mentioned above, to evaluate the points as letter grades; getting AA, BA, BB, CB and CC at master degree and scientific preparation programs, and AA,BA, BB and CB at doctorate programs are considered successful at the courses. At postgraduate programs, a student failed at any course can take the exams at the end of the semester even if the course is not opened up the following semester. The student failed at this exam on the ground of absence or not carrying out the preconditions of the lesson repeats the lesson when it is opened up. If the lesson is subtracted or not opened up, an equivalent lesson to it is determined by the suggestion of the concerned head of department and by the decision of the board. Under these circumstances, the student is responsible of the equivalent lesson instead of the lesson that s/he needs to repeat. The adjustment of the grades of the students who practice upon the national or international student Exchange programs like Erasmus and Farabi are executed by the decision of the board and the decision by the institution directory. These grades are recorded to the academic transcript. The academic standing of the student is determined at the end of every semester on the term grade point averages and general grade point averages that is calculated on the coefficients given as the letter grades according to the concerned regulations. Term grade point averages and general grade point averages are calculated by the grade point averages. Grade point average (GPA) is calculated by the division of the total credits to the total out of the multiplication of the course credits and letter grades´s equivalents. GPA is calculated as two digits after the comma. Both term grade point average and general grade point average are determined by the grades of the courses from AA to FF. All of the grades are recorded to the academic transcript.
12
Graduation Requirements
Doctorate program is formed by at least eight courses providing that they are not less than 24 credits and more than 30 credits, one seminar at course and dissertation stage, proficiency test, thesis suggestion, thesis study, thesis exam and the publications stated at the regulation´s 44th article´s second subsection. The thesis should have one of the following features: novelty to science, developing a new scientific method or applying a known method to a new branch. It should be published as the full text at an international index magazine. The name of the doctorate student may not be the first one. The publication of the candidate who is going to take the argument of the doctorate should be about the doctorate thesis or the branch s/he is doing doctorate.

PhD Program at the Department of Pathology is given by four professors, one associate professor and one assistant professors.
Scientific research in Department of Pathology focuses on the diseases of mammalian and avian species. Samples from the field and experimental studies are investigated under in vivo and in vitro conditions. Histochemistry and immunohistochemistry are used for the investigation of both field and experimental samples. Cell culture laboratory is used mainly for in vitro studies and modelling of diseases. The Department also houses a necropsy hall and separate laboratories for histopathology, molecular pathology and immunohistochemistry, and cell culture.
