General Description
Internal Medicine Doctorate Program, Graduate School of Health Science – Uludag University, has been continued since 1993. Throughout this period, thesis of 20 PhD students (13 of them were regular, and the rest was un-regular staffed) were finished successfully and they have gained a PhD degree.
Doctorate programme in Internal Medicine department has currently been going with four professors, one docent and two associated professors. There is also one emeritus professor who is Prof Dr Nilüfer AYTUĞ, at the end of the 2011.
The mission of the Internal Medicine Department doctorate program is as follows: global scientific education of DVM’s, to gain detecting problems and their solutions and analytical consideration in association with national and international scientific areas.
Compulsory and elective lectures of large animal, small animal and exotic animals are given to doctoral students, thus making a PhD thesis were provided to them on these subjects.
The department offers the second and the third cycles of higher education in terms of ECTS credits (180-240 credits awarding a Doctoral degree). After the successful completion of the program and fulfillment of requirements, a doctoral degree in Internal Medicine is awarded.

Profile of The Programme
The Internal Medicine Department offers a internal medicine doctorate education within the framework of postgraduate educations. After this education at the Internal Medicine Department an internal medicine doctorate (PhD) is awarded. During the doctorate program the students have to track current developments and literature, to plan and work in scientific investigations at the department. Doctorate students have to present a seminar and have to publish a paper. In this way they also develope their presentation techniques and literature browse. With the quick improvement of internal medicine, right and quick access of this informations have also be essential and also have to be learned.

Occupational Profiles of Graduates With Examples
Alumni of PhD program in internal medicine are able to utilize their knowledge and study in all topics related to animal health both locally and countrywide. Especially doctoral studies in farm animals meets the needs of herd health management. Hence alumni of PhD program in large animal internal medicine provide service in large dairy and feedlot farms about prophylaxis and treatment of diseases. Results of studies conducted on equine internal medicine are successfully adapted for use of hippodromes and jockey clubs. Alumni of small animal internal medicine PhD program are carrying out clinical studies at different points of the country in both individual or corporate organizations. Graduates of exotic animal medicine and wildlife PhD program are able to work in national parks and wildlife rehabilitation centers.
10
Access to Further Studies
The entrance into postgraduate doctoral studies is possible for candidates who have successfully earned a Bachelor´s degree, and can provide ALES with a passing grade and meet foreign language qualifications.
11
Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading
The exams of the courses can be done written, written-oral or applied. In order to take the tests of the postgraduate programs, the attendance of the courses is required to be at least 70% or 80%. The exams are evaluated by over 100points awarded. To be successful, at master with thesis and master without thesis programs, it is required to get at least 70 points out of 100 points; at doctorate and proficiency in art programs it is required to get at least 75 points out of 100 points.
Within the frame of the principals mentioned above, to evaluate the points as letter grades; getting AA, BA, BB, CB and CC at master degree and scientific preparation programs, and AA,BA, BB and CB at doctorate programs are considered successful at the courses.
At postgraduate programs, a student failed at any course can take the exams at the end of the semester even if the course is not opened up the following semester. The student failed at this exam on the ground of absence or not carrying out the preconditions of the lesson repeats the lesson when it is opened up. If the lesson is subtracted or not opened up, an equivalent lesson to it is determined by the suggestion of the concerned head of department and by the decision of the board. Under these circumstances, the student is responsible of the equivalent lesson instead of the lesson that s/he needs to repeat.
The adjustment of the grades of the students who practice upon the national or international student Exchange programs like Erasmus and Farabi are executed by the decision of the board and the decision by the institution directory. These grades are recorded to the academic transcript.
The academic standing of the student is determined at the end of every semester on the term grade point averages and general grade point averages that is calculated on the coefficients given as the letter grades according to the concerned regulations.
Term grade point averages and general grade point averages are calculated by the grade point averages. Grade point average (GPA) is calculated by the division of the total credits to the total out of the multiplication of the course credits and letter grades’s equivalents. GPA is calculated as two digits after the comma.
Both term grade point average and general grade point average are determined by the grades of the courses from AA to FF.
All of the grades are recorded to the academic transcript.

Education opportunities:
Clinic of internal medicine is divided into three subbranches; clinic for farm animals, clinic for horses and small animal clinic. Mobile clinic service, internal and external clinical practices are performed in order to improve practical skills of students. Mobile clinical programs are established at certain days of the week to villages close to university clinics, large cattle farms and jockey clubs aiming to improve large animal practice skills of students. As well as routine clinical practices in small animal clinics also regular small animal practices are carried out in municipal shelters within the framework of the protocol between two institutions. Custom designed clinics such as behavioral problems clinic, clinic for exotic pets and cardiology clinic are established for requirements of special small animal branches. Deparment of internal medicine is equipped and capable to perform diagnostic techniques such as endoscopy and cardiological examinations (ECG, color dopplerechocardiogarphy). Routine hematological and biochemical analysis are performed within the cental laboratory of the department. Evaluation of blood gases, coagulation studies, cytological examination, urine and stool analysis are other diagnostic tests routinely carried out by central laboratory. Diagnosis and monitoring of treatment period for every patient is possible through routin use of laboratory; also when required laboratory could be used for research oriented analysis and evaluations.
