History of Medicine and Ethics
General Description
The Department of Medical History and Deontology at Uludağ University Faculty of Medicine was established under the Department of Public Health by Senate decision dated March 24, 1978, and numbered 78-6. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ayşegül Demirhan Erdemir began her tenure as the department´s first faculty member upon her appointment to the Associate Professor position by the Rectorate on March 7, 1980. According to the Faculty Dean´s letter dated November 10, 1981, and numbered 11777, communicated to all faculty members, the existing units of the Faculty of Medicine were temporarily grouped into four categories (Basic Sciences and Basic Medical Sciences Group, Preclinical Group, Surgical Group, and Medical Group) pending the establishment of departments. The "Medical History and Deontology Division" was placed within the "Preclinical" group. Thus, our Department became an independent department separated from the Department of Public Health. The department´s name was changed to "Deontology" in October 1982, and subsequently to "Medical History and Ethics" by the Council of Higher Education (YÖK) in 2010.
With the addition of new faculty members to the Department, the program was renewed and reopened in the 2015-2016 academic year.
Upon successful completion of the PhD program, the title of "PhD" in the field of "History of Medicine and Ethics" is conferred.

Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading
Course examinations can be conducted as written, written-oral, or practical. Examination documents and results are forwarded to the relevant institute through the head of the department within five working days. The principles regarding the determination of course success are as follows:
a) In order to take exams in graduate programs, a minimum of 70% attendance is required for theoretical courses and 80% for practical courses. Exams are evaluated with scores out of 100. To be successful, a minimum score of 75 out of 100 is required in the doctoral program. The letter grade and coefficient equivalents of scores out of 100 are as follows:
Letter Grade Coefficient Score
AA 4.00 90-100
BA 3.50 85-89
BB 3.00 80-84
CB 2.50 75-79
FF 0-74
b) Within the framework of the above principles, in the evaluation of scores out of 100 with letter grades; a student who receives AA, BA, BB, and CB grades in the doctoral program is considered to have passed that course.
c) In addition to the above letter grades, the following letters can also be used:
D (Absent) grade; is given to a student who does not fulfill the conditions and requirements regarding course attendance and/or course practices. D grade is entered into the grade point average calculation as an FF grade.
G (Pass) grade; is given to students who successfully complete non-credit courses and thesis studies.
K (Fail) grade; is given to students who fail non-credit courses and thesis studies.
ç) Students who fail compulsory and elective course exams, fail due to absenteeism, or do not fulfill the prerequisites of the relevant course take the relevant course(s) in the first semester it is offered. If a student fails an elective course, they can choose a new course instead.
d) The exam results, exam documents, and protocol of the courses in graduate programs are forwarded to the relevant institute through the heads of the department within five working days following the completion of the exams.
e) The recognition of grades for courses taken by students who benefit from national or international exchange programs such as Erasmus and Farabi is made by the decision of the institute´s administrative board upon the proposal of the head of the department. These grades are entered into the student´s transcript.
Course grade point average
(1) The student´s academic standing is determined by the semester academic grade point average (YANO) and cumulative academic grade point average (GANO), which are calculated over the coefficients given as letter grade equivalents in the table in Article 21 of this Regulation at the end of each semester. YANO is the weighted grade point average of the semester in which the student is enrolled. GANO is the weighted grade point average calculated at the end of the course period, taking into account all the courses in the curriculum of the department in which the student is enrolled from the beginning of their graduate program.
(2) YANO and GANO are calculated with weighted grade point averages. The weighted grade point average is found by dividing the total obtained by multiplying the credits of the courses taken by the equivalent weight coefficients of the letter grades received from the courses by the total credits. The weighted grade point average is calculated with two digits after the comma.
(3) Both YANO and GANO are determined by including the grades from (AA) to (FF) that the student receives from credit courses in the evaluation.
(4) All grades received by the student are entered into the grade book

The remaining load must be provided by the proficiency exam, Doctoral Specialization Area course, and Thesis Advising course.
b) For students in the integrated doctoral program, the graduation requirement consists of a total of at least 300 ECTS credits, including at least fourteen courses, a seminar, the Doctoral Specialization Area course that can be taken every semester, the Thesis Advising course, the proficiency exam, and the thesis work.
