General Description
Department of Social Studies Education Master program is established in the 2012-2013 academic year and carried out by the Institute of Education Sciences with courses and consultants given by prominent academicians. It places major emphasis on the advancement of knowledge through research, and it aims to renew and improve the science education according to the universal standards and today’s needs. Academic efforts based on this vision support the development of next generation of scholars providing them to gain a scientific vision, acquire knowledge, skills and competence in the profession.
Elementary Social Studies Education master title is received on the condition of completing successfully and meeting the requirements of the program with 120 ECTS credits.

Specific Admission Requirements
1- To hold an undergraduate diploma,
2- To have achieved a required score on the ALES (Academic Personnel and Graduate Education).
3-To have the required competence in a foreign language.

Specific arrangements for the recognition of prior learning
The provisions in “Regulation on Transfer among Associate and Undergraduate Degree Programs, Double Major, and Subspecialty and the Principals of Credit Transfer among Institutions in Higher Education Institutions” are applied.

Qualification Requirements and Regulations
To take courses (at least 28 credits in equivalence of 120 ECTS) from this program or the graduate programs involved in the other related departments.
To succeed in these courses.
To get at least 70 over 100.
To be successful in the Seminar course and Master’s thesis defense.

Profile of The Programme
The graduates of the Elementary Social Studies Education Graduate’s program have a full knowledge of the existing theoretical and substantive academic literature. The aim of this program is to train the individuals who have knowledge, skills, attitudes and experience to do qualified research, teaching and education; who have critical thinking skills and self confidence and who have competencies required to follow the innovations related to the field within the national and international framework.
Objectives:
1. To be a department competent to provide graduate studies in the field of social studies education, conduct research studies related to the field, to provide and develop physical and academic sustainability.
2. To provide a research environment which can find solutions to the problems in Social Studies Education field by effective use of the quantitative and qualitative research methods, and design, develop and apply the program.
3. To be a department which can produce permanent solutions with new approaches for the daily problems arose during social studies education practices or unexpected complicated situations.
4. To train well-educated and competent social studies education teachers and academicians at national and international levels.

To gain all the knowledge in Education and Social Studies fields such as history, geography, to improve theoretical and practical skills in the proficiency level, and to produce new knowledge by combining the findings in various fields.

To be able to develop new approaches to unexpected complicated problems, design methods and take part in teamwork.

To be able to make critical evaluations of the knowledge in social studies field to control and lead the learning and to acquire life-long learning skills.

To share their knowledge and findings in the field of social studies in the form of oral or written presentations in national and international conferences, make discussion about these studies, to evaluate the current developments within the country’s realities, to develop strategies, policies and practicing programs in their interest subjects and to evaluate their results from quality process perspective

To be able to critically evaluate the knowledge acquired in the fields of Social Studies Education, to determine the needs, to try to evaluate his life-long learning, to follow the developments and to use technology effectively to achieve the current changes in the field.

To have the knowledge about evaluating the reliability and validity of the information of Social Studies through the nature, the source and the limits of the field.

To discuss information, production and methods related to Social Studies practices.

Occupational Profiles of Graduates With Examples
The graduates of the program can be employed as researchers, expert teachers or consultants in public or private institutions and foundations.

Access to Further Studies
The students who graduate from the program may apply to study in Elementary Education PhD programs in the Educational Sciences Institutes of the other universities or PhD programs of the related fields on condition that they meet the requirements of those programs.

Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading
Students are obliged to register at the beginning of the semester and attend at least 70% of theoretical courses and 80% of practices in order to take the final exam. They take at least one mid-term exam and a final exam. The contribution of midterm exams to the course success is mid-term exam 50% and final exam 50%. Completion grade is 100 points for all exams. They should take at least minimum 40 points out of 100 in the final exam. The results AA, BA, BB, CB, and CC are assessed with a pass. DC and DD are conditionally assessed with a pass if a student’s grade-point average is at least 2,0.

Graduation Requirements
In order to complete the program, they must take all the courses (120 ECTS credits in total) having 2,00 general average grades out of 4.00 on the core subjects and are to be successful in the Seminar course and Master’s thesis defense.

Educational activities are carried out in well-equipped classrooms in the Social Studies Department. In the Elementary Department, there are classrooms, labs and computers in the halls for the students. In our Faculty, there are 3 computer labs where the students can have access even after lessons. The University Library is quite rich in periodicals and online data base sources. Our students effectively use both the Uludag University Library and the Education Faculty Library.
