19 Objective of the Course: The main purpose of this course is to teach the decisive factors in formation of cultures and to evaluate role of religion as satisfying personal and collective needs including primitive and monotheistic religions. Moreover it is aimed to give examples about how science sparks social change and how new technologies affect cultural change.

21 Learning Outcomes:
1 To be able to exemplify the decisive impact of religion upon cultural values;
2 To be able to comment upon the relationship between religious, belief sand social formation;
3 To be able to evaluate social and cultural changes caused by scientific and technological improvements on local and global level.;
4 To be able to explain effect of belief systems and scientific research upon the emergence of different worldviews and civilizations.;
5 To be able to explain effect of belief systems and scientific research upon the emergence of different worldviews and civilizations.;
6 To be able to compare effects of scientific and technological improvements to world history and to non-western societies;
7 To be able to evaluate the process of education in a wider perspective in terms of transmission of cultural values.;
8 To be able to explain evolving of mentality from empire to nation state.;
22 Course Content:

1 Religion conception in ancient and medieval cultures.
2 The place of religions depending on divine inspiration in history.
3 Tolerance and secularism, religion in the Ottoman society in 19th century.
4 The characteristics of human mind and science. Scientific improvements in the periods of ancient and medieval ages.
5 The fact of human mind and science in Turkish-Islamic culture.
6 Scientific developments in early modern times and age of enlightenment.
7 In the period of first and second industrial revolution, impacts of the scientific improvements upon culture.
8 Influences of specialization revealing in the industrial society on cultural values.
9 Relationship between education and culture
10 Educational institutions in the Seljuks and Ottomans.
11 The new educational institutions of Turkish republic and modern education.
12 Dimensions of fast cultural interaction in information age communication developing occur.
13 Determining conceptions of cultural identity/national identity.
