19 Objective of the Course: To get acquainted with and understand temperament, body language and natural and learnt behaviour of horses in order to achieve a correct and harmonic communication and interaction between man and horse.

21 Learning Outcomes:
1 Is able to approach a horse safely and communicates with it;
2 Recognizes and understands the psychological situation of a sound horse and is able to respond appropriately;
3 Knows the difference between natural behaviour and learnt habits;
4 Understands hierarchy, herd psychology, leadership and is able interpret body language ;
5 Recognizes abnormal behaviour and has an idea of its aetiology;
6 Recognizes unwanted misbehaviour due to intrinsic and extrinsic factors and knows how to cope with them by educational methods;
7 Knows the relation between behaviour and health;
8 Is able to take advantage of the temperament, psychology and natural behaviour pattern of a horse for its education and sportive usage.;
22 Course Content:
Week Theoretical Practical
1 General information about ethology: definition, importance, normal behaviour, methods for behavioural biology, temperament, differences due to breed and gender
2 Development of behaviours: emotions and motivation, evolution and behaviour, social hierarchy, courage and fear
3 Evolution and domestication of the horse, communication with body language, social behaviour: herd behaviour, relations of status and hierarchy, leadership, living in groups
4 Management of behaviour: impulses and signals, function of the nervous system, brain functions
5 Learning behaviour: education and manners, communication and learning, learning biology of the horse, learning of young animals
6 Communication: contents and scope, acoustic communication (voice, sound), olfactory communication (odours), tactile communication (touch), visual communication (body language and mimics)
7 Reproductive behaviour: oestrous and copulation, stallion and gelding, pregnancy and birth
8 Nutrition and digestion: food and water intake, digestion and defecation
9 Action and rest: sleep and doze, flight, exploration and attention, observation
10 Comfort behaviour and play: wellness of the horse, life lecture plays
11 Aggression: offensive and defensive behaviour, memory, misbehaviour due to extrinsic effects, behaviours emerging from pain and discomfort, behaviour due to physical insufficiencies and learnt desperation
12 Behavioural problems in the stall: weaving, walking in the box and severe stress, pawing, kicking, biting, masturbation, wind sucking, eating of faeces, scattering of food, resisting bit and saddle, resisting to walk by hand, reluctance to enter start box or van etc.
13 Behavioural problems in the barn: resisting rider to mount, resisting to walk, walking backwards, bucking off the rider, hypersensitivity against external effects, rearing, rider faults, escaping, teeth grinding, head shaking, etc.
14 Analysis of misbehaviour in riding horses, relation of cause and consequence, solutions-remedy, training strategies against misbehaviour, behavioural problems due to training faults, successful education and training of the horse (summary of the lecture)
