19 Objective of the Course: This course focuses on some current and alternative approaches in foreign/second language teaching. The aims of the course are: 1) to involve pre-service EFL teachers in a thorough analysis and synthesis of ELT approaches with respect to their underlying theories and principles, and the techniques associated with those approaches and methods and 2) to help pre-service EFL teachers develop a critical understanding of these language teaching approaches.
20 Contribution of the Course to Professional Development Through a focus on current and alternative language teaching approaches, this course will help teacher trainees reflect on their own beliefs and philosophies of language teaching and learning and thus reconstruct them by developing a critical understanding of key principles of second language education.
21 Learning Outcomes:
1 list current communicative and learner-centred approaches and methods in foreign/second language teaching;;
2 compare and contrast language teaching approaches;;
3 identify the basic common features language teaching approaches;;
4 say what purposes teaching techniques and materials serve in each language teaching approach;;
5 decide which language teaching approaches/methods would be appropriate according to different language learning and teaching situations;;
6 discuss the applicability of each language teaching approach/method to Turkish education system and;
7 discuss if there is a best language teaching approach/method and why.;
8 create conditions conducive to learning in light of their knowledge of language teaching approaches and a variety of variables.;
