19 Objective of the Course: The objective of this optional course for non-major students is to emphasize the roots of polyphonic music and its historical development in the world and in Turkey; to go over its genres and forms, its instruments, ensambles and composers; and to cultivate a certain level of aesthetic appreciation.
20 Contribution of the Course to Professional Development
21 Learning Outcomes:
1 To be able to explain the concepts of monophony and polyphony.;
2 To be able to explain initial developments in the history of polyphonic music.;
3 To be able to explain homophonic and polyphonic styles in the context of polyphonic music. To be able to hear and identify their differences.;
4 To be able to explain historical developments on the emergence of opera, the most advanced form of musical stage pieces.;
5 To be able to identify vocal and instrumental genres of polyphonic music and to explain their properties.;
6 To be able to interpret social foundations of polyphonic music in Baroque, Classic, Romantic and 20th century music eras. ;
7 To be able to acknowledge important composers in the history of music and identify their compositions.;
8 To be able to explain advances that led to the emergence of polyphonic music in Turkey.;
9 To be able to explain advances in polyphonic music of the Turkish Republic and to identify Turkish composers and their works.;
10 To be able to identify institutions of polyphonic music education in Turkey and performing artists.;
22 Course Content:
Week Theoretical Practical
1 Introduction to the History of Polyphonic Music course. Definition, contents, ways of instruction, methods of assessment and evaluation.
2 Terms and concepts of monophony and polyphony. Monodic, polyphonic and homophonic styles.
3 Historic development of music through ages. Birth of music and music of classical antiquity.
4 Properties of the music of middle ages and primitive polyphony: Organum. Weight of polyphony in religious music. Music culture in the Romanesque and Gothic periods.
5 Vocal polyphonic style; advances and examples in Reneissance music and instrumental music.
6 Baroque period: The aristocracy’s music appreciation and the Opera.
7 Musical genres and forms of the Baroque period. Transition from contrapuntal writing to harmonic writing. Composers, examples.
8 Music of the classical period, Mannheim school and foundation of symphonic orchestra. Developments in instrumental music, composers and samples.
9 Romanticism in music: Personalism and emotionalism. The importance of piano, new symphonic genres, programmed music, composers and samples.
10 National music movements: The mighty five, composers of Chechoslovakia, Spain and Northern countries, examples.
11 20th century music movement: Polyphony from the aspects of modality, tonality and atonality, examples.
12 Polyphonic music in Turkey. Developments prior to the formation of the Republic. Muzika-i Hümayun and polyphonic music in the Ottoman palace.
13 New developments in the polyphonic music of the Republic. First generation Turkish composers, samples from their work.
14 Polyphonic music in contemporary Turkey. Institutions, composers and artists.
