19 Objective of the Course: The objective of this course is to lay the foundation for musicology starting with the definition of the term ‘music’ and its etimology; to underline the connection between social structure and musical genres; and to equip students with the ability to explain the historical development of music and its vocal / instrumental types from the aspects of their structure and form as well as their periodic characteristics and properties of style.

21 Learning Outcomes:
1 To be able to explain the etimology, formation, evaluation and localization of the term ‘music’.;
2 To be able to explain and exemplify musicology and its branches.;
3 To be able to explain the function of music and its genres, formation of sound and its properties.;
4 To be able to interpret the connection between musical genres and the social structure. ;
5 To be able to explain the development and evaluation of the art of music under the influence of social change in the course of history. ;
6 To be able to exemplify vocal and instrumental musical genres with respect to their historical development.;
7 To be able to understand and explain the composer’s social role.;
8 To be able to interpret works of music with respect to various characteristics which develop as a result of changes in social life including form, style and interpretation;
9 To be able to classify works of music with respect to their period and style. ;
10 To be able to distinguish and exemplify composers with respect to their characteristics of style. ;
22 Course Content:
Week Theoretical Practical
1 Introduction to the Music Culture course. Definition, contents and the way of instruction of the course. Methods of assessment and evaluation, terms and concepts.
2 How can the term music be etymologically described? Histrorical evaluation, formation and localization of the term. What is music? What are its different definitions? What are the views regarding the birth of music? What are the various sound groups with respect to the formation and the properties of sound.
3 What is musicology? What are its branches? What is the place and importance of the history of music in musicology?
4 What are the benefits of knowing the history of music? What are its sources and types?
5 What is the importance of music in the pre-historic eras and in the cultures of ancient history?
6 What is the historic development of music in the early middle ages, in the romanesque and gothic periods? What were the advances in musical scores, vocal, instrumental and polyphonic music?
7 What are Reneissance and Humanism? What were the advances in fine arts, literature, natural sciences and geography in Reneissance? What are the major characteristics of Reneissance music?
8 General evaluation.
9 What is opera? What idea was influential at its birth? What were the related developments in this period? What are the examples for earlier works?
10 What are the cultural roots for baroque art? What are the contributions of the royal elite to cultural and artistic development?
11 What were the advances related to the newly established forms such as the opara, oratorio and cantate?
12 What are the main characteristics of baroque music?
13 Who were the significant comoposers representing baroque music? What were the characteristics of J.S.Bach’s and Handel’s music in terms their compositions and artistic properties?
14 What are significant examples of baroque music? What are the vocal and instrumental styles? What are the properties of the musical style in this period?
