19 Objective of the Course: To recognise the musical styles, genres, forms, techniques, composers and performers in the 20th century and by listening to the selected music examples of the mentioned periods to discuss the technical and aesthetical values of these works.
20 Contribution of the Course to Professional Development The most important contribution of this course to the student is to understand the development of music in the historical process and to create an artistic interpretation by using this information during artistic performance.
21 Learning Outcomes:
1 To be able to explain the historical development of music between the two world wars.;
2 To be able to understand the historical background of music approaches in the 20th century.;
3 To be able to explain the technical development of music before the second world war.;
4 To be able to explain the technical development of music after the second world war.;
5 To be able to recognize the composers and genres in the 20th century.;
6 To be able to recognize the forms and theories in the 20th century.;

2 Russian composers; Prokofiev and Schostakovich.
3 “P.Hindemith and “Gebrauchsmusik” (music for use):
4 Neoclassic approach; Stravinsky.
5 Twelve tone techniques and A.Schoenberg.
6 Expressionism and Schoenberg..
7 Second Vienna School: Schoenberg, Webern, Berg.
8 Repeating courses and midterm exam
9 Music after second world war.
10 Total serializm; Boulez
11 Total serializm; Messiaen and Stockhausen
12 Twelve tone technique.
13 “Aleatoric music” (chance music) Cage, Varese.
