19 Objective of the Course: To acquire knowledge about the historical development of Turkish music before 20th century in the process of cultural evolution.
20 Contribution of the Course to Professional Development The course contributes to the student's professional development, to gain a general knowledge about the historical processes, periods, theorists and composers of Turkish music and important breaking points and to reflect these on their professional studies.
21 Learning Outcomes:
1 To be able to acqire knowledge about the historical development periods of Turkish music culture.;
2 To be able to explain the effects of Islam on the culture of Turkish music.;
3 To be able to explain the culture of music at the times of Selcuk Turks.;
4 To be able to classify Ottoman music in terms of historical development.;
5 To be able to examplify the effects of Turkish music in Europe in the 18th and 19th centuries .;
6 To be able to put forward ideas about the approaches to music and culture during the first years of Turkish Republic.;

Week Theoretical Practical
1 Historical periods and eras of Turkish music in the process of cultural evolution.
2 Comments on Turkish music culture during Altays before Huns.
3 Music culture at the times of Mid-Asian Turkish goverments.
4 Turkish music culture at the times of Karahanlı and Gazne.
5 Turkish music culture at the times of Selcuk Turks in Anatolia.
6 Philosophy of Mevlana and its reflections on Sufi music, other properties of Sufi (Tasavvuf) music.
7 The formation and historical improvement and transformation eras of Ottoman music
8 The beginning of Ottoman music, Mehterhane and Enderun, studies on music theory.
9 Second era in Ottoman music; works on scoring down music, theoricians and composers.
10 Third era in Ottoman music, efforts on westernization and the foundation of Muzıka-ı Humayun.
11 Ottoman times folk music, troubatour poet tradition.
12 The effects of Turkish music in Europe in XVIII. and XIX. centuries.
13 Interaction with Europe about music in XIX. century especially in İstanbul.
14 Evaluation on music studies in the last century of Ottoman period.
