19 | Objective of the Course: | This course aims to instruct Visual Arts teacher candidates in the methodology of teaching by combining undergraduate courses in their field and vocational formation courses. This course aims to pursue this goal by instructing students in four different areas including critique, aesthetics, history of art and application. |
20 | Contribution of the Course to Professional Development | The Visual Arts teaching II course is important in terms of providing theoretical information to prospective teachers on how to do their lessons methodologically when they are appointed to the profession. In addition, the unit plans they prepare contribute to their professional development. |

1 | Inform students about course objective, course content and learning outcomes, -Explain the method of arranging and preparing of process folders, -Unit 1.1. Introduction to “History of Arts Education in Secondary Education.” Administer pre-test.Activity: Discuss the research of the previous week and provide feedback.Presenting the term project: Each student will be assigned a basic arts element by lottery and will prepare an index by finding artworks related to the element. Sample template will be provided to the students. This project will be turned in at the day and time of the course final. Activity: Questions of “What is creativity? How to be more creative in Visual Arts education?” will be answered by conducting a research. The answers will be limited to 3. Each student should make his own definition after the initial answers. Research answers will be put in quotation marks and followed by parantheses including the information (Author’s Last Name, First Name, Title of Book, Publisher, Publication Location, Publication Date, Number of Pages). The research memo should be at most 3 pages. | |
2 | Unit 1.1 “History of Arts Education in Secondary Education,” -Present the history of arts education, -Explain the theories and movements in historical context, -Explain and discuss misconceptions about arts education and present information on the concepts, -Administer post-test, -Evaluate pre- and post-tests. | |
3 | Unit 1.2. “What is art for? What are the functions of art?” Pre-test, -Discuss functions of art and present information on the relevant concepts, -Explain and discuss concepts in the context of discussing “What is art for?” Check students’ progress on their term projects.Activity: Students will write a memo on the topic of “How have you improved in the field of arts since primary school? Which theory do you adopt in your work? Why?” The memo should be at most 2 pages. | |
4 | Unit 1.2. “What is art for? What are the functions of art?,” -Explain and discuss the following theories: “Art is to make something special,” “Art is to express oneself,” “Art is a social critique,” “Art is to create a world,” and “Art is for the sake of art.” -Administer post-test, -Evaluate pre- and post-tests. Activity: Discuss the research of the previous week and provide feedback. | |
5 | "How to create a unit plan?" Making a Presentation. Unit Plan Flow Chart, Unit Plan cover chart and evaluation chart of Unit plan assignments are distributed to the student. They are asked to prepare a Unit plan as a Term Paper. They are told to make a self-evaluation by filling out the evaluation form of the Unit plan they have prepared. Assignments will be uploaded to UKEY as PDF and Word files. | |
