19 Objective of the Course: In addition to political history of Ottoman Empire that constitutes a significant part of Islamic History discovering features belong to social life like religious life, family organization, educational and economic level, foundations, architecture and social groups etc. is crucial for comprehending Ottoman society. Analyzing the cities that were under the control of the Ottoman Empire before, and now under the control of thirty different countries especially Turkey, will reveal common values of these geographies. With this course, which is planned to be opened considering that there are many students from the aforementioned geography, it is aimed to explain Ottoman social life from different aspects to both the students of our country and our guest students by taking different cities into the center and to make it easier for them to prepare a thesis in the next stage.
20 Contribution of the Course to Professional Development Knowing cities' social and cultural life, will contribute to understand Ottoman social life that has been effective in a vast geography for centuries.
21 Learning Outcomes:
1 To comprehend Ottoman family structure’s general features ;
2 To comprehend religious life of the Ottoman society;
3 Being able to analyze the case in which different ethnic and religious groups were settled together in Ottoman cities.;
4 To comprehend importance and role of ulama in Ottoman society;
5 Being able to get information about historical buildings in Ottoman cities and to comprehend their importance;
6 Understanding the importance of guild organizations in the economic life of cities.;
7 Through learning histories of social institutions in cities such as foundations or almshouses comparing them with contemporary implementations.;
8 Learning folk beliefs in Ottoman cities and to comprehending its effect on society.;
9 Understanding environmental, animal love etc. issues in Ottoman cities.;
10 Being able to present gained knowledge on Ottoman cities in meetings that are related with the subject.;

2 Religious Life (temples- worship)
3 Churches- synagogues - Non-Muslims (Non-Muslims and their relationship with Muslims )
4 Scientific and literary life (Scientists, poets, madrasa, education)
5 Economic life (tradesmen, guild system, manufacturing and trade)
6 Charity (Foundations, imarets, solidarity etc.)
7 Mystic life (Sects, sheiks, dervishes )
8 Slaves and female slaves
9 Folk beliefs (Traditions, customs and rituals, superstitions, etc.)
10 Daily life ( Home and neighbourhood life, neighbourly relations )
11 Crimes and punishments
12 The environment and animals
13 Ottoman cities through the eyes of foreign travellers
14 Natural disasters in Ottoman cities and measures taken for them. (epidemics, floods, earthquakes, fire etc.)
