19 Objective of the Course: This course aims to examine the currencies, economic systems, and numismatic materials of the Middle Ages to understand the commercial, political, and social dynamics of the period.
20 Contribution of the Course to Professional Development Students will explore medieval numismatics as a historical and archaeological discipline, gaining the ability to analyze the relationship between currency and the economy.
21 Learning Outcomes:
1 Students will be able to trace the development of coinage from the late Roman Empire through the medieval period, understanding how currencies evolved and their role in shaping the economy and society.;
2 Students will examine the symbolic and practical functions of medieval coins, including their use in trade, politics, and religious contexts, and assess their impact on medieval societies.;
3 Students will develop the ability to use numismatic evidence to reconstruct historical events, understand economic systems, and analyze social structures.;

3 The Emergence and Development of Medieval Currencies • Transition from Roman to medieval coinage • Types of currencies used in medieval Europe • Coinage and trade in the Islamic world
4 Mining and Metal Resources in the Middle Ages • Processing of gold, silver, and other precious metals • The role of mining in coin production • Social and economic impacts of mining activities
5 Mints and Coin Production • Operation of mints in the Middle Ages • Coin minting technologies • Authority of kings and feudal lords over currency
6 Trade and Currency in Medieval Europe • Trade routes and the circulation of currencies • Fairs and their role in urbanization • Christian perspectives on trade and money
