19 Objective of the Course: To introduce the musical styles, theories, forms, techniques and composers of middle ages, Renaissance and Baroque periods and by listening to the selected music examples of the mentioned periods to discuss the technical and aesthetical values of these works.
20 Contribution of the Course to Professional Development The most important contribution of this course to the student is to understand the development of music in the historical process and to create an artistic interpretation by using this information during artistic performance.
21 Learning Outcomes:
1 To be able to explain the historical development of Middle Ages, Renaissance periods.;
2 To be able to comprehend the historical background of Renaissance and Baroque ages.;
3 To be able to recognize the composers of Renaissance and Baroque ages.;
4 To be able to recognize the genres, forms and theories of Renaissance and Baroque ages.;
5 To be able to explain the significance of music styles of Renaissance and Baroque periods.;
6 To be able to comprehend the technical development of music of Renaissance and Baroque periods.;
22 Course Content:

1 Early christian liturgy polyphony (School of Notre Dame) and chant styles.
2 Motet and development of motet, Machaut, Landini
3 The Italian trecento, Dufay, Josquin and cyclic mass
4 Reformation, counter reformation and Palestrina
5 Madrigal, French chanson and 16th century ınstrumental music
6 Early aroque: antecedents of opera, Monteverdi and Orfeo
7 Repeating courses and midterm exam
8 Music in 17th century: Lully, Purcell, Corelli
9 Late Baroque; Vivaldi and concerto.
10 Instrumental and vocal music of Bach
11 Haendel and opera
12 Italian opera seria and opera buffa and opera reform
13 Instrumental music: Scarlatti ve C.P.E. Bach
14 Towards to classical period from baroque period.
