19 Objective of the Course: The aim of the course is to set up a parallelism between the American history and American literary canon. The survey begins from the early colonial times up to the 20th. century. As an outcome of this course the students will be able to identify characteristics of distinctive literary periods in American Literature, identify major American authors and their works, place literary works in historical context and to improve their abilities to read, write, speak publicly, and formulate analyses and arguments.
20 Contribution of the Course to Professional Development They will improve their abilities to read, write, speak publicly, and formulate analyses and arguments. This course can provide students with access to the culture of the people whose language they learn and teach.
21 Learning Outcomes:
1 They will be able to analyze and study concepts related to the history of American literature.;
2 They will be able to understand the interaction between the colonial period upto the 20th century American literature and history and its impact on social life.;
3 They will be able to evaluate and criticize narratives written in different times of the literary history.;
4 They will be able to understand and observe life and culture today in America.;

5 Romanticism (Rip Van Winkle, Washington Irwing The Fall of the House of Usher, Edgar Allan Poe Rhodora, Ralph W. Emerson)
6 The Era of Realism and Naturalism
7 THe discussion of the novella "Maggie: The Girl of the Streets" from naturalist perspective
8 The twenties
9 The thirties
10 The forties ("the death of a salesman"- Arthur Miller)
11 The sixties- examples from drama
