19 Objective of the Course: To introduce the musical styles, theories, forms, techniques and composers of middle ages, Renaissance and Baroque periods and by listening to the selected music examples of the mentioned periods to discuss the technical and aesthetical values of these works.

1 To be able to explain the historical development of antique age and middle ages.;
2 To be able to comprehend the historical background of middle age, renaissance age.;
3 To be able to explain the historical development of Baroque age;
4 To be able to recognize the composers, genres, forms and theories of renaissance and baroque periods;
5 To be able to distinguish between the musics of renaissance and baroque periods;
6 To be able to obtain the terminology required for music discussion and review.;

3 Early Christian liturgy and chant. Early sacred polyphony: school of Notre Dame
4 Early motet: Development of isorhytm
5 Ars Nova and later motet, Machaut
6 Landini and the Italian trecento, Dunstable ve Dufay
7 Josquin and cyclic mass
8 Repeating courses and midterm exam
9 Reformation, counter reformation and Palestrina
10 Madrigal, French chanson and 16th century ınstrumental music
11 Early baroque: antecedents of opera, Monteverdi and Orfeo
12 Music in the 17th century: Frescobaldi, Lully, Purcell
13 Corelli and sonata
14 Vivaldi and concerto
