19 Objective of the Course: The objective of this course is to learn the Turkish music culture together with its historical roots and stages of development; to understand its influence in Central-Asia, Mid-Western Asia, Anatolia, Balkans and Europe; and to have the ability to appraise its state in the future with a knowledge of its theory, structure and existing genres.

21 Learning Outcomes:
1 To be able to explain developments regarding the historical roots of Turkish music culture. ;
2 To be able to understand the Turkish music’s place in the individual’s life, in society and in the state during the Hunnic era.;
3 To be able to evaluate Turkish music in the Göktürks and Uyghurs eras from the aspects of its sound system, instruments, genres and themes. ;
4 To be able to explain changes in their music under the influence of Islamic culture after Turks’ transition to Islam. ;
5 To be able to understand developments regarding Turkish music theory books. ;
6 To be able to understand the Turkish music’s place in the individual’s life, in society and in the state during Seljuk and Ottoman eras.;
7 To be able to explain the role and importance of military music in the Turkish music culture and to exemplify relevant advances in clusters.;
8 To be able to explain Turkish music culture’s influence on and how it is influenced by the European and other surrounding music cultures. ;
9 To be able to interpret and exemplify the importance given to the Turkish music culture by Turkish statesmen.;
10 To be able to explain Turkish music culture in the Turkish Republic and contemporary music styles.;
22 Course Content:
Week Theoretical Practical
1 Introduction to the Turkish music culture course. Definition, contents and the way of instruction of the course. Methods of assessment and evaluation, terms and concepts.
2 Advances serving to the formation of Turkish music culture starting from pre-historic eras.
3 Turkish music culture in the Hunnic and Göktürk eras, the sound system, themes, instruments and genres.
4 Music in the lives of individuals, in the society and in the state during Uyghur and Karakhanid eras with new developments in the society.
5 Advances in genres, music of the mosque and the tekke, examples of theory books.
6 Music of the Great Seljuk Empire and the Sultanate of Seljuk. Interactions with the surrounding music cultures.
7 Institutions of Turkish music in the Ottoman Empire: the Enderun school, the Mevlevi lodge and the Muzıka-i Humayun
8 Ottoman period manuscripts.
9 Ottoman – European music culture. Interactions and the ruling class’s approach to the music culture.
10 Scores of the Turkish music: Ebced, Ali Ufki, Kantemiroğlu, Hamparsum and European musical writings.
11 Music education in the school and its importance, the regulatory code of general education (Maarif-i Umumiye Nizamnamesi).
12 Music in the Turkish Repuplic. Development of polyphinic music, institutions and composers.
13 Types of music education : General, professional and amateur music education.
14 Contemporary types of music, their place and importance in the Turkish music culture.
