19 Objective of the Course: This course aims to enable students to gain knowledge about; the introduction of developmental psychology (history, issues), the grand theories and stage theories, research methods, the biological foundations of life-span development, the sensational/perceptual, cognitive, socio-emotional processes of certain life stages and the contextual issues (culture, family, school, occupation) that is related to the human-being.
20 Contribution of the Course to Professional Development
21 Learning Outcomes:
1 Explains the historical background of developmental psychology; describes the main processes, stages and issues of human development, defines the major theories and research methods.;
2 Explain prenatal development and birth processes; by providing examples of nature-nurture interactions as the causes of individual differences.;
3 Describe detailed knowledge of the learning, remembering and conceptualizing processes of individuals in the early stages of life. ;
4 Describe the development of social interactions and attachment; explain the social contextual effects on infant development. ;
5 Explain the current views of cognitive changes in childhood and summarize language development. ;
6 Describe the normal developmental in various stages; demonstrate information competence at listing characteristics of handicapped/gifted individuals and the supporting strategies for common problems.;
7 Explain the interactions between the changing socio-cultural context (parents, peers, cohorts) and the individual’s physical, cognitive and personality development.;
8 Identify the characteristics of the changing life styles of individuals’ as time passes; career development, work, leisure time and retirement. ;
9 Discuss life-span developmental instabilities and stabilities by reciting longitudinal research results. ;
10 Discuss the psychological phenomena of the individuals’ decisions linked particular life-stages; the attitudes and ways to deal with risks involved. ;
