19 Objective of the Course: Giving the knowledge of the reflection to the art; the mythology, religion and vision of the ancient and mediaeval word, the ability of analysing them iconografically, to valuate as a information source for art history.

21 Learning Outcomes:
1 Recognising the word of faith of Ancient and Mediaeval culture ;
2 Understanding the importance of mythology and its place in art from Antiquity to the present;
3 Learning the ways of expression in art, the faith and religion in paganism and Christianity;
4 Recognising Greek and Roman gods, mythological characters and mythos;
5 Having ability to analise iconographycally the artworks;

1 Ancient Greek and Roman cultures, resources, first hand-written works forming the source of Greek mythology, the realm of the gods
2 The myth of creation in the Greek mythology, the first heroes, Titans, the twelve great Olympian
3 Myths and iconography:Zeus/Iupiter
4 Myths and iconography: Hera/Iuno; Athena/Minerva
5 Myths and iconography: Apollon-Artemis/Diana; Aphrodite/Venus
6 Myths and iconography: Ares/ Mars; Dionyssos/Bacchus
7 Myths and iconography: Poseidon/Neptun, Hades: Herakles:
8 Midterm and general review
9 The Old Testament, major passages
10 The Old Testament, imagery, iconography
11 The birth of Christianity, the Bible, the first Christian depictions
12 Religious imagery in the early Christian period, general, principles
13 The characters, subjects, compositions in mediaeval Byzantine religious paintings
