19 Objective of the Course: The objective of this elective course for non-majors is to cover the roots and historical development of major music styles in the culture of Turkish music and to go over religious and secular examples of various musical styles.

21 Learning Outcomes:
1 To be able to explain the source, formation and properties of sound.;
2 To be able to explain etymologic roots of the word music and to give a definition of music.;
3 To be able to explain musical styles and styles existent in the culture of Turkish music.;
4 To be able to explain historical development of Turkish folkloric music together with vocal and instrumental styles.;
5 To be able to explain historical development of Turkish art music together with vocal and instrumental styles.;
6 To be able to explain sources and development stages of military music.;
7 To be able to explain the roots of popular music and to interpret its relation to contemporary social life.;
8 To be able to define and classify musical styles as folkloric, art, popular and military music using examples.;
9 To be able to explain the origin and stages of development of Polyphonic Turkish Music.;
22 Course Content:

1 Introduction to the Music Styles and Culture of Turkish Music course. Definition, contents, ways of instruction, methods of assessment and evaluation.
2 What is sound? How is sound produced and what are its properties?
3 What is music? What is its definition? What ideas are dominant on the birth of music?
4 What is style in music? What are the major music styles?
5 Birth of Turkish folkloric music and its stages of development. Vocal and instrumental styles of Turkish folkoric music and its instruments.
6 Composers of Turkish folkloric music. Weigh of Turkish folkloric music in the culture of Turkish music. Contemporary issues of Turkish folkloric music.
7 Birth of Turkish art music and its stages of development. Vocal and instrumental styles of Turkish art music and its instruments.
8 Sound system and notation in Turkish art music. Composers of Turkish art music.
9 Source of polyphonic Turkish art music and its historical development.
10 Composers of polyphonic Turkish art music, samples.
11 Source of military music and stages in its historical development.
12 Styles of religious music. Weight and function in social life.
13 What is popular music? Important music styles in popular culture.
14 What criteria are used in classifying music styles? What properties distinguish styles from others? What are their examples?
