19 Objective of the Course: The purpose of this course is to teach the major principles of Ataturk and Turkish Revolution. Turkish Revolution as well as the principles of Ataturk are very important for Turkish education system. From the primary school through the university education, this subject is taken very seriously and it is compulsory for all students. Therefore this university level class aims to teach and directs students to understand these principles in detail.

1 To understand and evaluate the reasons of the transition from an Empire to a Nation State;
2 To understand how Turkey, in minds of Ataturk, can reach the levels of civilized nations;
3 To evaluate the current issues with historical knowledge;
4 To gain the knowledge of political science and international relations;
5 To benefit from different sources and analyze them;
6 Ability to adapting to new issues, producing new ideas, making a decision and solving problems;
7 To make the synthesis of universal values and national values;
8 To evaluate the Turkish modernization process correctly;
22 Course Content:
Week Theoretical Practical
1 Basic concepts of the course, teaching methods and resources of the class as well an overview of the World in 19th. Century
2 An overview of the causes of collapse of the Ottoman Empire and the Ottoman Empire. Reform movements and the consequences
3 Movements and ideas in the Ottoman Empire to save the state
4 The Eastern Question and the wars that triggered the collapse of the Ottoman Empire (1877-78 Ottoman-Russian War, Tripoli War, the Balkan Wars)
5 The general state of the World and the Ottoman Empire before and during the World War I. The fronts of the War such as the front of Dardanelles
6 The ideologies of the World such as nationalism, and their impact on the Ottoman minorities and the Armenian Question
7 The Mondros Armistice, its effect on the Empire
8 The Beginning of occupation
9 Occupation of the Anatolia and Thrace Istanbul government during occupation and the attitude of the minorities, the associations
10 Mustafa Kemal starts the National Independence by going to Samsun. Erzurum and Sivas Conventions
11 Representing the Board of Deputies-Istanbul government relations between the opening of Parliament, the National Pact, the invasion of Istanbul, the opening of Turkish National Parliament
12 Fronts in Turkish National Struggle, Mustafa Kemal’s actions in Western front
