19 Objective of the Course: Aim of the course is to analyze the problems faced, the important points and methods utilized when translating literary works (for e.g. poetry, novels, stories), and other various text types such as; technical, law and medicine. Within this framework students also attempt to translate and practice translating (from English to Turkish) these text types.
20 Contribution of the Course to Professional Development
21 Learning Outcomes:
1 To be able to comprehend developments appearing in different periods in the history of translation and their effects on translation.;
2 To be able to analyze prominent theories which have an effect on the translation process and the decisions of the translator.;
3 During the translation process, to be able to divide the source text into its semantic structures. ;
4 To be able to recognize decoding procedures during the translation process.;
5 To be able to depict translation problems and find solutions to overcome these problems.;
6 To be able to analyze, decode and translate written products from English to Turkish.;
7 Through translation analysis to be able to comprehend and transfer the style, visual and audio characteristics embedded in the field of literary works. ;
8 Relating to the field of technology, law, and medicine with the practice of translation to be able to expand vocabulary knowledge and analyze the structure of a text.;
22 Course Content:
Week Theoretical Practical
1 A short introduction to the history of translation. An analysis of major theories influencing the field of translation.
2 The recognition of the pre-translation period through investigations of examples of different types of texts and their translations.
3 Students awareness of the basic structure and characteristics of the English language used in the press. Translation of an article published in a newspaper (e.g. ‘The New Humanism’ written by David Brooks )
4 Students awareness of the basic structure and characteristics of the language of the press. Translation of an article published in a newspaper. (e.g. ‘In Search of Monsters’ written by Maureen Dowd)
5 The analysis and translation of different styles of writing found in the press,. For e.g. recipes, astrology, film extracts, advertisements etc.
6 To compare and contrast a short story in terms of equivalence and adequacy between the source and target text.
7 Translation of literary texts. (an examples of feminizm in American literature: translation of Virginia Woolf’s ‘Professions for Women’).
8 A study of the language and attempt to translate plays written in English. ‘The Lady of Larkspur Lotion’ written by Tenessee Williams.
9 Analyzing and translating the poetry of distinct authors of the modern period of English and American literature.
10 A comparative and critical analysis based on the equivalence and adequacy of the translation of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages and backtranslation of the descriptors).
11 Relating to the field of technology, with the practice of translation to be able to expand vocabulary knowledge and analyze the structure of technical texts. (e.g. spherometer).
12 Relating to the field of law, with the practice of translation the recognition to a certain degree the language of law and to decode the structure of the text.
13 With the employment of simple texts based on medicine, the comprehension of the language of medicine and expanding vocabulary knowledge through attempts to translate these text types.
14 Investigation of students views regarding the course (material, topics, lesson conduction) and their gains at the end of the 14 week period. Provision of information about the final exam.
