19 Objective of the Course: This course aims at a study of the major religious traditions in their historical and cultural contexts. Concepts of the Holy; sacred stories, rituals, symbols, ethical codes, and sacred communities are examined in Pre-literate cultures, Hinduism, Buddhism, Taoism, Confucianism, Judaism, Christianity and Islam.

21 Learning Outcomes:
1 To demonstrate knowledge of the origins of each of the major world religions with specific interest in the social, cultural and ethnic backgrounds of the founders and earliest adherents of each of the major religions.;
2 To identify and briefly explain the major teachings and practices of each of the world religions studied.;
3 To engage in the learning process by noting the key metaphysical presuppositions and positions of each of the religions studied;
4 To develop an awareness of the influence that each of the religions studied has had on the world as we know it.;
5 To demonstrate the ability to use basic research tools available in the field of religion and philosophy, and draw reasonable conclusions on the basis of careful study.;
6 To demonstrate competence in the use of religious terms, such as ultimate reality, myth, symbol, ritual.;
7 To respond critically through the written medium and orally in class the key epistemological positions of each of the religions studied.;
8 To distinguish exoteric or external expressions of religion (doctrine and ritual, e.g.) from esoteric expressions of religion (secret, inner knowing possessed by a few).;
9 To compare living religions in the context of culture and civilisation;
10 To engage in the way world`s living religions approach to public space and morality.;
