Learning Outcomes:

1 Can tell the subject matter of linguistics and of the various subdisciplines.; 2 Can describe the design features of human language.; 3 Can explain the criteria used to classify English consonants and work out a consonant described along these criteria as well as describe one.; 4 Can explain the criteria used to classify English vowels and work out a pure vowel described along these criteria as well as describe one.; 5 Can describe the articulation of diphthongs and triphthongs.; 6 Can apply the minimal pair test.; 7 Can recognise a phonological process from written transcription.; 8 Can generate a phonological process according to the rule.; 9 Can identify weak forms of grammatical words.; 10 Can place primary word stress on the appropriate syllable.;
