General Description

Brief History
Department of Social Studies Education consists of 8 faculty members and 1 research assistant. In the Department, students are provided with a four-year undergraduate education that includes general culture, field education and teaching profession knowledge and skills. Teaching profession training practices are carried out with Teaching Practice I and II courses in the 7th and 8th semesters in schools determined by the National Education Directorates within the framework of the cooperation of the Ministry of National Education and YÖK.

Qualification Awarded
The department offers 240 ECTS credits in the field of Social Studies Education. Graduates who successfully completed the program with established qualifications shall have a bachelor degree in Social Studies Education.

Specific Admission Requirements
Candidates must have high school diploma and an eligible score from the University Entrance Exam.

Specific arrangements for the recognition of prior learning
The provisions in “Regulation on Transfer among Associate and Undergraduate Degree Programs, Double Major, and Subspecialty and the Principals of Credit Transfer among Institutions in Higher Education Institutions” are applied.

Qualification Requirements and Regulations
To obtain bachelor´s degree in the program the students must successfully complete the required and elective courses (total 240 ECTS) and maintain the minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0/4.0.

Profile of The Programme
The primary mission of the Department is to prepare social studies teachers. Furthermore, the department aims to prepare educators to advance the profession of teaching social studies by the repertoire of research methods, the effective uses of technology and the analysis, design, development, implementation and evaluation of instructional practices.

1. Knows the terminology and understands the basic concepts in social sciences.
2. To be aware of legal aspects of his/her profession as well as of the professional and ethical responsibility as a teacher. To have a good sense of social justice and to be a conscious citizen.
3. Communicates well verbally and in writing; speaks at least one foreign language, follows the international literature, and communicates with foreign colleagues.
4. Knows and uses diverse evaluation and assessment techniques effectively.
5. Work collaboratively with colleagues in both his/her own field and other fields.
6. Follows cutting edge developments in teaching social sciences and ınternalize the concept of lifelong learning to his/her life.
7. To produce able teachers who are well informed in techniques of research methods and use them effectively in the field of study.
8. Designs field specific teaching-learning process.
9. To provide active involvement of students to the activities that would require them to apply high level of thinking and theorizing.
10. To prepare activities and projects in social sciences.
11. To prepare teaching materials that suits the topics of interests of social sciences and the needs of the students.

Occupational Profiles of Graduates With Examples
Our graduates can work as a social studies teacher at public or private institutions (by meeting the conditions of the relevant institutions).

Access to Further Studies
Candidates who have successfully completed their undergraduate education can continue their master programs, provided that they get a valid grade from the ALES exam and also by meeting acceptance conditions stated in the advertisement of the university.

Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading
Each student is required to attend at least 70% of the theoretical courses and at least 80% of the practices in order to register for the courses at the beginning of the term. Students who do not meet this requirement are not taken to the exam and the student is given the grade "Absentee" (D). (According to the decision of the Faculty of Education Board of Directors (2022-36), undergraduate students who have met the attendance requirement once and take the same course again are considered to have met the attendance requirement.) The effect rate of the final exam must be 60%. All exams are evaluated over 100 points. Also, there is a requirement to get at least 50 points from the final exam.

To complete the program students must successfully complete the required and elective courses (total 240 ECTS) and maintain the minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0/4.0

The Program has technically well-equipped learning environments / classrooms. The University Library is quite rich in periodicals and online data base sources. Our students effectively use the Bursa Uludag University Library.
