Religious and Moral Education
General Description
Department of Religious and Moral Education was first established in the academic year 1997-98 at Faculty of Ilahiyat/Divinity. In 2006-2007, Turkish Higher Education Council decided to transfer this department to Faculty of Education to bring all the `teacher training` departments together. This also led to some changes in the program of Department of Religious and Moral Education. The current Bachelor program has been updated accordingly in the academic year 2010-11 in parallel to the programs of all other Departments Turkish Universities. The number of graduates from the Department is 50 in the academic year 2009-10, and 60 in 2010 – 2011. Al the graduates have been placed as religious education teachers in primary and secondary schools by the Ministry of Education.
• Diploma for Teaching Religious Education (for those who successfully complete 240 ECTS)
• Double Major in Faculty of Education (for students with an average of 2.50 in academic points.)
• International Certificate for Teaching Religion and Moral Education (for those who attend and complete the relevant courses in this program)
• Diploma in Minors in the field of Psychological Care, Turkish Language Studies, Social Studies.

Specific Admission Requirements
Candidates must have high school diploma and an eligible score from the University Entrance Exam.

Specific arrangements for the recognition of prior learning
The provisions in “Regulation on Transfer among Associate and Undergraduate Degree Programs, Double Major, and Subspecialty and the Principals of Credit Transfer among Institutions in Higher Education Institutions” are applied.

To obtain bachelor´s degree the students must successfully complete the required and elective courses (total 240 ECTS) and maintain the minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0/4.0

Profile of The Programme
• Department of Religious and Moral Education trains teachers for religious education (years 4-8) at Primary and Secondary schools.
• Candidates are required to complete a study program consisted of field knowledge (47%), general culture (27%), pedagogics (26%).
• Elective courses: 12%
• Courses on field knowledge have been distrubed evenly throughout the program in balance with courses on pedagogics and general culture.

Occupational Profiles of Graduates With Examples
Graduates are employed as religious education teachers in both public and private schools under the Ministry of National Education. Some graduates also are employed as Imam-preachers and Quran teachers by the Presidency of Religious Affairs. They may also find academic positions at Faculty of Divinity.

Access to Further Studies
Upon successful completion of undergraduate degree, candidate can study in postgraduate program if s/he has eligible ALES exam score and has sufficient knowledge of a foreign language.

Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading
A variety of assessment methods such as mid-term(s), assignment(s), exercise(s), project(s), practice(s), and a final exam are implemented in the program. Assessment methods may include classical test(s), multiple-choice test(s), homework(s), performance evaluation(s), and product evaluation(s). In order to graduate from the program, cumulative GPA must be minimum 2.00. A course grade is constituted by evaluating the above stated elements and given by using letters. To succeed in a course, students must get at least 40 points from the final exam and have at least 50 points average. Students who get AA, AA, BA, BB, CB and CC are considered successful. DC and DD are notes that conditionally successful. Students have to attend 70% in theoretical, 80% of practical sessions of courses.

• All courses are taught by experts in the field knowledge as well as pedagogics.
• Department has three academic staff in tenure position.
• Students in years 3 and 4 may take courses from upper semesters up to 6 credits
• Students may take summer school courses up to 10 credits if they wish to complete their studies earlier.
• Students may transfer their studies to another University Department in the same field.
• Students can apply for Farabi (similar to Erasmus) program a student and staff exchange program between Turkish universities.
• Students can use both the central library in the main campus and the library of the faculty of Divinity.
• Students are encouraged and assisted for not only their academic and cultural but also for extra-curricular activities such as travel, sports, leisure activities.
• University Central library and faculty’s library are open to both students and faculty members’ use.
