The Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Technology Program was established within the Department of Electricity and Energy of Bursa Uludağ University Yenişehir İbrahim Orhan Vocational School. It admitted its first students in the 2006-2007 academic year and gave its first graduates in the 2008-2009 academic year. It is a two-year (four semesters, 120 ECTS) full-time associate degree program taught in Turkish. The vocational school, which started education in the 1998-1999 academic year, operates in a building with a closed area of 3,071 m² constructed by Orhan Holding. Students are placed in the program through the Higher Education Institutions Exam (YKS) with their TYT score. The annual quota, which was 30+1 for many years, was increased to 35+1 in 2026 in response to growing demand. The lowest placement rank of the program improved from 1,629,603 in 2024 to 1,179,368 in 2026. The curriculum applied from the 2026-2027 academic year was renewed in line with the MEDEK criteria, the 3+1 vocational education model of the Council of Higher Education (YÖK) and the views of the sector representatives in the advisory board. Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Software and Vocational Foreign Language became compulsory courses, the Refrigerant Gases and Environment course supported by the Ministry of Environment, Urbanisation and Climate Change was added, and the Vocational Training in the Workplace course (16 ECTS) was placed in the fourth semester. Cooperation protocols have been signed with YILKAR, EVİNOKS and ARM Soğutma for workplace training. One associate professor and one lecturer work full time in the program, and lecturers of the vocational school who specialise in energy and related fields also teach in the program. An advisory board of sector representatives and graduates meets every semester and contributes to updating the course content. The program is being evaluated in the accreditation process of MEDEK (Association for Evaluation and Accreditation of Vocational Education) in the 2026 fall term.

Occupational Profiles of Graduates With Examples
Graduates can work as air conditioning and refrigeration technicians in the fields of heating, cooling, air conditioning and ventilation in the public and private sectors. The main fields of employment are factories producing air conditioning and refrigeration equipment, vehicle air conditioning production and assembly plants, commercial and industrial refrigeration, cold storage and cold chain companies, ventilation duct manufacturing and installation companies, mechanical installation contractors and project offices. Graduates can also work in authorised sales and service centres, in the technical operation departments of large buildings such as hospitals, hotels, shopping centres and business centres, and in the technical units of public institutions. In these fields they carry out installation, commissioning, operation, periodic maintenance, fault diagnosis, equipment selection and after-sales technical support. They can be appointed to technician positions in public institutions through the KPSS exam and can establish their own service or installation businesses after gaining sufficient experience.
10
Access to Further Studies
Graduates who complete the program successfully may transfer to bachelor´s programs through the Vertical Transfer Exam (DGS) administered by ÖSYM. According to the 2026 DGS Guide, the bachelor´s programs directly related to the program are Mechanical Engineering and Energy Systems Engineering. Graduates may also choose bachelor´s programs that are open to all associate degree programs in the guide, such as Business Administration, Economics and Public Administration. The current list of eligible programs is announced every year in the DGS Guide published by ÖSYM.
11
Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading
Students must attend at least 70% of theoretical classes and at least 80% of practical classes. At least one midterm exam is held for each course, and assignments, practical work, projects and quizzes may also be evaluated as in-term work. In-term work contributes at most 40% to the raw grade, while the final or make-up exam contributes 60%. In the courses of the program, one midterm exam (40%) and one final exam (60%) are generally applied. All exams and assignments are graded out of 100.
To pass a course, students must score at least 50 in the final or make-up exam (YSSL) and have a raw grade of at least 50 (HBAS). The letter grades of students who meet these conditions are determined by the relative grading system in courses with 20 or more students. AA, BA, BB, CB and CC are passing grades, DC and DD are conditional passing grades, and FD and FF are failing grades. Conditional grades count as passing for students whose cumulative grade point average is at least 2.00.
Students who are entitled to take the final exam but do not take it or fail may take the make-up exam. Students with an accepted excuse may take a make-up midterm exam, and students who need at most two courses to graduate may take an additional exam under the conditions set out in the regulation. The internship is graded by the student´s applied training report (40%), the employer´s report (20%) and the evaluation of the applied training committee (40%), and students who score at least 65 pass.
12
Graduation Requirements
To graduate, students must pass all compulsory courses and the required number of elective courses in their curriculum, collect at least 120 ECTS credits, have a cumulative grade point average (CGPA) of at least 2.00 out of 4.00 and successfully complete the 30-working-day compulsory internship. For students following the curriculum applied from the 2026-2027 academic year, successful completion of the Vocational Training in the Workplace course (16 ECTS) is also required. Graduation is finalised by the decision of the Vocational School Board after review by the Graduation Committee.
