19 Objective of the Course: Teaching basic research and scientific article writing technique, introducing different scientific publication types, teaching the student how to choose appropriate journal Teaching the student about the general principles of article writing and grammar rules, teaching article writing part by part Teaching the student how to improve a written article Teaching the student about the communication with the journal and response to reviewers Teaching the student how to choose correct words while writing an article and how to get use of Internet and other sources for this

21 Learning Outcomes:
1 The student learns basic research and scientific article writing technique, different scientific publication types, and how to choose appropriate journal.;
2 The student learns the general principles of article writing and grammar rules, and learns how to write an article part by part. ;
3 The student learns how to improve a written article.;
4 The student learns about the communication with the journal and response to reviewers ;
5 The student learns how to choose correct words while writing an article and how to get use of Internet and other sources for this.;
22 Course Content:
Week Theoretical Practical
1 Introduction to the course, workflow, principles of scientific studies and scientific publications, types or scientific articles (review, case report, letter to the editor, research article, etc), choosing a journal Choosing a journal for the student, creating study groups (if there are more than one student)
2 Basic principles of article writing and grammar rules: A/an/the, -ic/–ical, usage of gerund and infinitive, differences between American and British English, by/with, count/noncount nouns, e.g./i.e./etc, et al, former/latter, how to express common second word, in/on/at, terminology in Latin Quis about the general grammar rules, discussion of quis questions, additional questions and practices
3 Basic principles of article writing and grammar rules (continues from the previous week): Singular/plural, subscript, superscript, that/which, punction marks, tenses in article writing Quis about the subjects studied in theoretical lecture, discussion of quis questions, additional questions and practices
4 Authorship and order of author names, guest/ghost authorship, principles of placing as author/in the acknowledgement Writing abstract, how to choose keywords, how to increase the probability of being found in search engines Evaluation of the Summary written by the student
5 Introduction in a research article: General principles of writing Introduction, talking about research by others, talking about your own study, talking about hypotheses and general beliefs, talking about lacks-contradictions of other studies, talking about the advantages of a method, basic sentences for animal studies, how to end Introduction, tenses used in writing Introduction, verbs most commonly used with “experiment/research/study”, most common mistakes Quis about the subjects studied in theoretical lecture, discussion of quis questions, additional questions and practices
6 Materials&Methods in a research article: General principles of writing Materials&Methods, talking about the source of the study material, talking about purchasing material-equipment, talking about experiment material, talking about patients, design of the study-talking about the groups, inclusion/exclusion criteria, clinical signs, talking about laboratory animals (purchasing, hybrid/knock-out, transgenic animals, care, losses, welfare, etc), animal use/ethical permissions, archival material, anesthesia/injection/other administrations Evaluation of the Introduction written by the student
7 Materials&Methods in a research article (continues from the previous week): Euthanasia, sampling/biopsy/autopsy/necropsy, talking about time, talking about numbers and amounts, blinded/double-blinded studies, talking about routine/previously performed procedures, talking about the advantages/disadvantages of a method, talking about interpretation of results, talking about follow-up, statistical methods, talking about special techniques Quis about the subjects studied in theoretical lecture, discussion of quis questions, additional questions and practices
8 Results in a research article: General principles of writing results, talking about lesions/diseases, talking about increases/decreases, talking about changes/fluctuations, comparing groups, talking about similarities/differences, comparing with previous studies, talking about unreported findings, talking about non-performed parts, talking about technical problems, citing tables and figures, giving statistical results, pooling of results, normalizing results, talking about the results of experimental studies Evaluation of the Materials&Methods written by the student
9 Conclusion in a research article: General principles of writing Conclusion, interpretation of results, results related to a subject, results suggesting something, results revealing something new, results contradicting with previous results, talking about unexpected/surprising results, yielding expected results, previous studies supporting results, gains of the study, talking about the lacks of the study, talking about personal views, talking about the need for further studies, closing sentences, verbs and tenses commonly used in Conclusion Quis about the subjects studied in theoretical lecture, discussion of quis questions, additional questions and practices
10 Writing Acknowledgement Writing Literature, abbreviations of journals, various referencing styles Tables and Figures, technical terminology about Tables and Figures Evaluation of the Materials&Methods written by the student
11 How to Improve an Article: Proper use of active and passive sentences, connecting consecutive sentences, eliminating unclear “it/they”, grouping ideas, grouping similar words, combining very short sentences, partition of very long sentences, avoiding repeats, constructing inverted sentences, subordinate clauses Quis about the subjects studied in theoretical lecture, discussion of quis questions, additional questions and practices
12 How a reviewer evaluates your manuscript, important points in writing an article, creating a check list, communication with the journal, respose to the reviewer, usage of editing marks and tools Evaluation of the Results written by the student
13 Useful information for article writing: Less known, but useful features of Microsoft Word, following changes, preventing word divisions, adding line and page numbers, conversion of units, levels of biosecurity, drug trials, axes in the body Quis about the subjects studied in theoretical lecture, discussion of quis questions, additional questions and practices
14 Dictionary: Commonly misspelled words, wrong use of scientific terminology, choosing the most appropriate word, using dictionary and thesaurus, Internet sources Evaluation of the Discussion written by the student
