19 Objective of the Course: The objective of this course, in the context of music theory and ear training studies, is to equip students with the ability to perceive and identify polyphonic textures; the ability to perform horizontal and vertical dictation; the ability to identify rhythmic structures; the ability to perform advanced analysis and deciphering and the ability to sight-read and dictate musical notation all backed with theoretical knowledge. In addition, students are expected to develop sufficient knowledge of methods and techniques for teaching in ear training.
20 Contribution of the Course to Professional Development By understanding the relationships between sounds To gain hearing, reading and writing skills and to use these skills in conjunction.
21 Learning Outcomes:
1 To be able to sing and dictate in all major – minor tonalities.;
2 To identify, analyze and compose modal music.;
3 To perform advanced studies in reading, dictating, analyzing and composing textures with two or three voices.;
4 To compose musical textures with tonal chords of three, four and five voices (dominant ninth etc.) ;
5 To understand modes of the Middle Age together with their properties and to compose applications.;
6 To perform solfege, dictation and rhythmic reading studies in different keys.;
7 To improve the ability to decipher. To accompany with the piano. ;
8 To analyze melodies with respect to their form and compose similar melodies (solfege or instructional music) with the same form.;
9 To gain abilities in teaching methods and techniques for ear training.;
10 To analyze compositions from the aspects of tonality, rhythm, melody, harmony, nuance and movement, and expression.;
22 Course Content:
Week Theoretical Practical
1 Course objectives and resources. Pre-evaluation for the level of readiness.
2 Dictation in various tonalities and compound measures.
3 Modal music: Identification, analysis and dictation.
4 Chords with three or four voices and their analysis.
5 Dictation with two or three voices.
6 Modes of the church music in the Middle Ages. Usage of these in the 20th century. Dictation, transposition and solfege with these modes.
7 Accompanying solfege pieces with the piano.
8 Methods and techniques for teaching in ear training.
9 Transposition by reading, dictating and performing.
10 Exercises to improve dechiphering. Applications of reading, dictating, analyzing and composing melodies with two and three voices.
11 Harmonic analysis. Chords with five voices.
12 Revision of modes. Modal dictation and dictation of rhythm/style with compound measures.
13 Solfege accompaniment with the piano. Analysis, dictation and accompaniment.
14 General revision, analysis of the form. Exercises of melody composition.
