19 Objective of the Course: The course aims to explore burial architecture, funeral rituals, and belief systems related to death in the late antique period.
20 Contribution of the Course to Professional Development By analyzing burial practices within their social, cultural, and religious contexts, the course helps students gain a deeper understanding of the death-related traditions of the era.
21 Learning Outcomes:
1 Students will be able to explain the social, cultural, and religious contexts of burial practices in the late antique period.;
2 Students will be able to analyze the relationship between burial architecture, funeral rituals, and belief systems of the era.;
3 Students will be able to compare burial methods in different geographical regions during late antiquity and evaluate regional and temporal differences.;

2 Death and Funeral Beliefs in the Ancient World • Death perception in Ancient Greece and Rome • Beliefs in the afterlife and the world beyond • The cultural and religious significance of funeral rituals
3 Cemeteries and Types of Tombs • Selection and positioning of burial sites • Different types of tombs: single chamber tombs, sarcophagi, monumental tombs • Early Christian period tomb architecture
4 Funerary Architecture in Late Antiquity • Development of tomb architecture in Late Antiquity • Construction of sarcophagi, tombstones, and catacombs • Changes in tomb architecture during the Early Christian period
5 Funeral Rituals and Preparations • Funeral ceremonies and preparations of the deceased • Gifts and offerings for the deceased • Funeral procession and burial rituals
