19 Objective of the Course: To equip students with the ability to make sound assessment about the structure of religion and the relationship between religion and society by giving them information about sociological theories , method, and basic sociological concepts.

21 Learning Outcomes:
1 Students will comprehend the field of sociology and sociology of religion , its scope, and topics and its place among other social disciplines; ;
2 Students will be knowledgeable about sociological techniques and methods ;;
3 Students will know the views of the forerunners of sociological thinking , its emergence, the first representatives of the field; and also know about the contemporary sociological trends; ;
4 Students comprehend the social dimension of the individual by learning the concepts of socialization, acculturation and social behavior ; ;
5 Students comprehend the basic elements of social structure such as role, social institution, social statue, social class etc; ;
6 Students will have the ability to explain the development of classical sociology of religion through classical sociological theories; ;
7 Students can explain sociological and religious theories on the functions of religion in society by learning the definition of religion and its origin; ;
8 Students will be able to learn the place of religion among other social institutions and their interaction; ;
9 Students can analyze social change, social development, social integration, and their relation to social structure; ;
10 Students will be knowledgeable about the place of religion in the face of modernization, secularization, globalization theories; ;

3 Basic sociological concepts I: Socialization, Social role, statue, class, social mobility and social stratification
4 Basic sociological concepts II: social institution, social group, culture and values
5 Events that paved the way for the development of sociology and sociology of religion in the 16.th and 19th centuries.
6 Forerunners of sociology and its emergence: İbn Khaldun, Saint-Simon and Comte
7 Marx, Durkheim and Weber
8 Problems of definition of religion
9 Functions of Religion
10 Religion and culture I
11 Religion and culture II
12 Place of religion in the contemporary society 1: modernization, secularization and its impact upon religion
13 Place of religion in the contemporary society 2: Post-modern discourse, pluralism and the new religious movements
14 Place of religion in the contemporary society 3: The position of Islam with respect to contemporary discourse and social movements
