19 Objective of the Course: To read and understand documents in the state archives of Ottoman period and every kind of manuscripts

21 Learning Outcomes:
1 The ability to comprehend the importance of paleography which is relevant to history and its relation to other sciences.;
2 The ability to explain the process of development of Arabic writing in Ottoman diplomacy.;
3 The ability to distinguish Sülüs, Nesih, Rika, Tevki and Murakka, which types of basic writings, from the other types.;
4 The ability to distinguish Taliq, Diwani, Celi Diwani, which types of other basic writings, from the other types.;
5 The ability to analyze the writing used by the Turks during Ottoman history.;
6 The ability to comprehend hijri months and symbols used in paleography.;
7 The ability to comprehend the methods of deciphering paleographic text which is difficult to read.;
8 The ability to comprehend method of transliteration of paleographic texts.;
9 The ability to read archive documents (I).;
10 The ability to read archive documents (II).;
22 Course Content:
Week Theoretical Practical
1 The paleography its place in the science of history.
2 Relation of paleography to other sciences.
3 Features of handwritten Arabic letters.
4 Arabic writings which is dotted or not dotted
5 Kinds of Arabic writing.
6 Basic types of writing: (I) Sülüs, Nesih, Riqa, Tevqi ve Muhakkak
7 Basic types of writing: (II) Talik, Divani, Celi Divani, Siyakat.
8 Writing types used by the Turks.
9 Figures used in book and handwriting.
10 Hijri/lunar months and symbols used in paleography.
11 Other historical elements in paleographic texts.
12 Transcription of paleographic texts.
13 Reading methods of writings which is hard to read.
14 Reading methods of old and damaged writings.
