19 Objective of the Course: The objective of the lecture is to provide knowledge about foot health and care and information about necessary technical equipment and application techniques in order the reduce economical losses due to foot and claw diseases in farm animals.
20 Contribution of the Course to Professional Development
21 Learning Outcomes:
1 The student knows anatomic, physiologic and functional structure of normal cow claws and is aware of factors affecting horn growth;
2 is able to do daily and yearly claw care in cows;
3 is able to define and classify normal/overgrown/deformed claws and can trim claws with appropriate tools;
4 understands the etiology, importance and complications of foot-claw diseases in cows and knows how to contend with;
5 recognizes lame animals within the herd and determines the dergree of lameness;
6 detects lamenesses of different origin, grades them and knows when to call for a veterinarian;
7 knows how to apply first aid in claw diseases, applies dressings and blocks and provides necessary care and feeding during reconvalesence period;
8 knows claw diseases in small ruminants, grades them and knows when to call for a veterinarian;
9 Knows how to prevent foot and claw diseases in small and large ruminants, analyses and removes the effect of different factors and applies claw baths and routine care;

1 Properties of a normal cow claw, anatomy, function and mechanical features Study on abbatoir material
2 weight bearing surface, normal and abnormal horn growth, deformed claws, causes for deformation, posture faults Study on abbatoir material
3 Claw care in cows (daily, yearly) Farm practice
4 Claw trimming (tools, equipment for fixation of the animal, different trimming techniques) Claw trimming on abbatoir material
