19 Objective of the Course: To teach students how to trim hooves of sport and working horses based on situation and needs and how to prepare normal and therapeutic shoes depending on sport branches and problems in case of disorders
20 Contribution of the Course to Professional Development
21 Learning Outcomes:
1 Approaches horses for shoeing in accordance with animal welfare and taking their mental and psychological status into account;
2 Makes young horses acquainted with the shoeing procedure and solves problems such as anxiety and resistance;
3 Makes a correct selection of shoes for the purpose of the horse;
4 Knows how to prepare and apply an appropriate orthopaedic shoe in case of hoof deformation and gait abnormalities;
5 Knows how to prepare the hoof and shoe for orthopaedic shoeing in order to treat most encountered locomotor, foot and hoof disorders and is aware of the most important tricks;
6 Cooperates with a veterinary surgeon and prepares and applies therapeutic shoes under his guidance;
22 Course Content:
Week Theoretical Practical
1 Appropriate approach during shoeing based on animal welfare (atypical behaviour, evaluation of the emotional status of the horse, general information about handling the horse) Treatment and handling practice on horses by simulating shoeing
2 Familiarize the horse (foal) with hoof trimming and shoeing, how to cope with difficult horses (causes, recognition, remedy, appropriate and inappropriate handling methods) Handling horses of different age and temperament for shoeing
3 Shoe selection based on purpose (riding horses, carriage horses, working horses, trotters, gallopers etc.) Preparation of the horse for shoeing, trimming the hoof and shod
4 Shoeing horses with hoof deformation, orthopaedic shoeing for motion faults () Preparation of special shoes
5 Orthopaedic shoeing in locomotion disorders (separation of the horn capsule , hoof cracks, hoof breaking, horn hypertrophy – crena) Preparation of shoes for hoof cracks
6 Orthopaedic shoeing in locomotion disorders (horn wounds, contusions, coronary wounds/inflammations, crapo etc.) Case discussions on slides
7 Orthopaedic shoeing in locomotion disorders (coronary draining tracts/, canker, narrowed/sheared heels etc.) Preparation of shoes for frog contusion and narrow heels
8 Orthopaedic shoeing in locomotion disorders (penetration of foreign bodies, nail contusion, compression) Foreign body penetration and related shoeing technique
9 Orthopaedic shoeing in locomotion disorders (pododermatitis aseptica/ purulenta (foot abscess)/ gangrenosa/ necroticans Preparation of a dressing shoe
10 Orthopaedic shoeing in locomotion disorders (acute and chronic laminitis) Preparation of a laminitis shoe
11 Orthopaedic shoeing in locomotion disorders (bone spavin) Preparation of a bone spavin shoe
12 Orthopaedic shoeing in locomotion disorders (joint mouse, chip fracture, P3-sesamoid fracture) Preparation of a closed shoe
