19 Objective of the Course: Improve the student’s knowledge about the basic theories in Linguistics and sociolinguistics; observe the different language use in speech communities, understand the reasons of these variations.
20 Contribution of the Course to Professional Development The course will contribute to the students’ professional development by providing them with the culture, lifestyle, and history of those people who are the native speakers of the language they are to teach. The students are encouraged to be open-minded for different ideas and worldviews.
21 Learning Outcomes:
1 Understand the relation between society and language, increase familiarity with the principal concepts in sociolinguistics. ;
2 Classify different sociolinguistic theories and concepts. Demonstrate these concepts by providing examples from Turkish and French.;
3 Identify and define language variation in the Turkish and French speech communities. Define language attitudes in these speech communities. ;
4 Recognize how language variation can lead to language change. Describe the factors leading to language change.;
5 Classify and compare phonological, morphological, semantic and syntactic differences as they are reflected in language use.;
6 Recognize the connections between special language use and wider social structures.;
7 Demonstrate how cultural and social differences are reflected in the language use.;
8 Acquire field’s knowledge to increase his/her language use. Examine the sociolinguistic studies and methodological tools used in Sociolinguistics critically.;
