19 Objective of the Course: It is aimed to provide students with up-to-date knowledge on a level compatible with European Union criteria about infectious and non-infectious diseases of the head, neck, back, tail, male genital organs, urinary system, fore and hindlimbs (bones and soft tissues) in horses, cattle, sheep, goat, and pig, that students the necessary skills to the practitioner veterinery surgeon to treat porfessionally and use the treatment methods and to educate them in appropriate.
20 Contribution of the Course to Professional Development Teaches infectious and non-infectious surgical diseases and treatment methods of the head, neck, thorax, abdomen, rump and tail, male genital organs, urinary system, soft and bone tissue of anterior and posterior extremities of horses, cattle, sheep, goats and pigs.
21 Learning Outcomes:
1 The student, detects the problem in most important surgical diseases of large animals under clinical and field conditions;
2 applies basic techniques of surgical treatment in large animals;
3 Is able to treat large animals based on indication and under the aspect of economical criteria;
4 Is able to interpret and solve the problem of species/breed specific disorders;
5 Contributes to production and performance on a high standard regarding animal health and welfare and enhances profit of the breeder;
6 Is aware of biosecurity and preventive medicine;
7 Gains multidisciplinary team work approach;
8 Owns approaches and skills of a professional veterinary surgeon ;
9 Perform a complete clinical examination and demonstrate ability in clinical decision making. ;
10 Collect, preserve and transport samples, select appropriate diagnostic tests, interpret and understand the limitations of the test results. ;
22 Course Content:
Week Theoretical Practical
1 Wound of eyelids, conjunctivitis, ceratitis, (BIK, OIK, KIK), wounds and foreign bodies of the cornea, cyst dermoid, exophthalmus, periodic ophthalmia of horses, eye tumours, differential diagnosis of eye diseases and ocular syndromes.
2 Soft tissues wounds of the head region, wound complications. Facial paralysis, fractures of the head region, cornual deformations, fracture and luxation of the horn, actinomycosis).
3 Diseases of nose and nasal cavity, sinusitis, disease of the air sac. Stomatology.
4 Oesophagus, larynx, pharynx, soft tissue diseases of the cervical region, bursitis nuchalis, fistula of the nuchal region, fractures of the ribs, torticollis, fracture of the caudal vertebrae and diseases of the tail.
5 Wounds of the abdominal wall and wound complications. Diseases of umbilical region. Diseases of the abomasum.
6 Hernias. Disease of the rectum and anus. Diseases of male urogenital system.
7 Normal and abnormal posture of the forelimbs and hindlimbs, normal gait and gait anomalies, orthopaedic horse shoeing. Congenital and acquired flexor tendon diseases
8 Diseases of the shoulder region (lameness, omarthritis, luxation and subluxatio humeri, OCD, bursitis bicipitalis, fracture of the scapula, fracture of the humerus, paralysis of suprascapular nerve, paralysis of the brachial plexus, tumours)
9 Diseases of the elbow and carpal region (paralysis of the radial nerve, bursitis olecranii, arthritis-arthrosis cubiti, fracture of the antebrachium, epiphysitis, wounds of the carpal region, precarpal bursitis, carpal hygroma, carpitis, fracture of ossa carpi)
10 Diseases of the femoral region, wounds of the sacral region, haematomas, tumours, diseases of the hip joints, fracture of the femur, paralysis of the quadriceps muscle, paralysis of the tibial, fibular, obturatory nerves, thrombosis of the iliac artery/ies)
11 Diseases of the stifle, tibia and tarsus region (gonitis, gonotrochlosis, patella luxation, fracture of the patella, bursitis, diseases of the tibial region and surrounding soft tissues, fracture of the tibia and fibula, rupture of the fibularis tertius muscle, rupture of tendon calcanei, spastic paresis, tarsitis, fractures of the tarsal bones, luxation, tarsal hygroma, OCD)
12 Diseases of the metacarpus and metatarsus region (wounds, fractures, exostosis, periostitis, ringbone, soreshine, tendinitis, tendovaginitis, arthritis)
13 Foot and claw diseases of the horse (laminitis, pododermatitis, shoeing faults, foreign bodies of the sole, hoof cracks, narrowed/sheared heels)
14 Foot and claw diseases of cattle, sheep, goat and pig (laminitis and its complications, digital/interdigital dermatitis, interdigital necrobacillosis, panaritium)
