19 Objective of the Course: To introduce the basics of western philosophy from classical age (6th century BCE) to the beginning of modern philosophy in the 17th century.
20 Contribution of the Course to Professional Development To develop a general understanding of early history of philosophy.
21 Learning Outcomes:
1 Being acquainted with basic problems and conjectures in the history of ideas.;
2 Being familiar with great historical philosophers and debates.;
3 Having a working knowledge of the main branches of philosophy (metaphysics, epistemology, ethics etc.).;
4 Getting to know about some great works in the history of philosophy.;
5 Getting acquainted with the main course of European cultural history.;
6 Learning about historical connections and interactions between European and Middle Eastern cultures.;
7 Being able to justify an idea systematically.;
22 Course Content:
Week Theoretical Practical
1 A general introduction to the course and our texts.
2 Mythological worldview, the birth of philosophical thought, philosophy of nature.
3 Still with the philosophy of nature, Democritus, the concept of fate and fatalism.
4 Athenian philosophy: Sophists, Socrates, and Plato.
5 Plato and "The Republic."
6 Aristotle: matter, forms, teleology.
7 Aristotle and "Nicomachean Ethics," virtue ethics.
8 Hellenistic philosophy, Epicurus, Stoics.
9 Two cultures: Indo-Europeans and Semites. Inroduction to the Middle Ages.
10 Philosophy in the Middle Ages: Augustine and Boethius.
11 Middle Ages, again, towards Renaissance: Anselm and Thomas Aquinas.
12 Renaissance and the Baroque.
13 Machiavelli and "The Prince" - political philosophy.
14 An overview of the semester and a very short introduction to modern philosophy.
