19 Objective of the Course: To give practical knowledge on tendon disorders especially to equine veterinarians that they are able to apply problem solving treatment methods in tendon disorders encountered in sport and working horses.
20 Contribution of the Course to Professional Development Students learn the tendo diseases and treatment methods of horses and gain experience in application in the field.
21 Learning Outcomes:
1 Know macro and micro morphology of equine tendons in sport horses and be aware of most encountered tendon injuries depending on type of exercise;
2 Be aware of etiological factors causing tendo injuries and know how to evaluate external influences on tendon health;
3 Perform ultrasonographical examination of equine flexor tendons in fore and hind limbs, know use of the technical equipment and sources for artefacts;
4 Recognize normal ultrasonographical anatomy of equine tendons and distinguish findings from pathology, make a list of differentials;
5 Be able to follow up tendon healing and make trainers and owners recommendations for the rehabilitation and return to racing of the injured horse;
6 Apply different up-to-date treatment methods in acute and chronic tendinitis, tendon lacerations and wounds;
7 Know orthopaedic shoeing methods in tendon disorders;
8 Make owner and trainer aware of correct training methods, care after racing and training and make recommendations on how to prevent tendon injuries in racing horses;
22 Course Content:
Week Theoretical Practical
1 Most encountered tendon disorders in sport horses, macro and micro morphology of the tendon
2 Some definitions: tendonitis (acute / chronic, overstrain), desmitis, tendinosis, desmopathy, tendinopathy
3 Aetiology and pathogenesis of tendonitis
4 Clinical findings and diagnosis of tendonitis
5 Ultrasonographic examination: forelegs (ultrasonographic anatomy, examination technique, pathological findings)
6 Ultrasonographic examination: rear legs (ultrasonographic anatomy, examination technique, pathological findings)
7 Differential diagnosis of tendon diseases (tendovaginitis, peritendonitis, neuritis, hematoma, oedema …)
8 Healing of tendonitis and follow-up
9 Treatment of acute tendonitis: medical and operative treatment, stem cell therapy
10 Treatment of acute tendonitis: physiotherapy, training program
11 Treatment of chronic tendonitis and recurrence, prognosis and rehabilitation
12 Treatment of tendon wounds and ruptures
13 Shoeing in tendon problems
14 Prophylaxis in tendon problems
