19 Objective of the Course: To demonstrate the importance of surgical diseases of tissue, organ and systems of small animal species such as head, upper and lower jaw, ear, mouth, pharynx, larynx, oesophagus, trachea, thorax, vertebral column, abdominal organs, urinary and male genital systems, hernias, anus and rectum on training of veterinarians.
20 Contribution of the Course to Professional Development LEARN THE DIAGNOSIS AND TREATMENT OF SMALL ANIMAL DISEASES.
21 Learning Outcomes:
1 To comprehend the diseases encountered in small animal surgery.;
2 To analyze the clinical, imaging and laboratory findings of these diseases. ;
3 To explain the diagnosis and differential diagnosis related disease.;
4 To determine the appropriate treatment options according to diagnosis.;
5 To apply to medical and surgical treatment in clinical conditions.;
6 To take into consideration the owner’s and the country's economic conditions for treatment. ;
7 To follow newly released books and articles about small animal surgery. ;
8 To be able to the case discussion with obtained information related on small animal surgery. ;
9 Use their professional capabilities to contribute to the advancement of veterinary knowledge and One Health concept, in order to improve animal health and welfare, the quality of animal care and veterinary public health. ;
10 Collect, preserve and transport samples, select appropriate diagnostic tests, interpret and understand the limitations of the test results. ;
22 Course Content:
Week Theoretical Practical
1 Aims, contents and presentation of the course. References of the course. Aetiology, clinical findings and treatment options of wound, chelitis, acne and furunculosis on head region in dogs and cats.
2 Emphysema, phlegmon, abscess and tumors on head region. Aetiology, clinical findings and treatment options of facial paralysis and trigeminal paralysis in small animals. Diseases that are cause of trismus. Masticatory muscle myositis. Aetiology, grade, clinical findings and treatment options of commotio and contusio cerebri, intracranial hematoma, brain oedema.
3 Anatomy and examination techniques of ear in small animals. Wound and phlegmon of the pinna. Aetiology, clinical findings and treatment options of otheamatoma. Functions of the external, middle and inner ear and hearing. Aetiology, types of inflammation, clinical findings and treatment options of otitis externa. Wounds of membrana tympani in small animals. Aetiology, clinical findings and treatment options of otitis media., Otitis interna, deafness, difficulty of hearing.
4 Aetiology, types and treatment options of epistaxis. Surgical aetiology of rhinitis. Foreign bodies and parasites of nasal cavity. Aetiology, clinical findings and treatment options of sinusitis. Inflammation, stones and tumors of salivary glands. Clinical appearances and treatments of retention cysts of salivary ducts. Tonsillitis. Clinical examination of oral cavity. Abnormalities, foreign bodies, and inflammation of oral cavity. Tumors of oral cavity. Inflammation, wounds and paralysis of tongue in small animals. Principles of oral surgery, antibiotics and anesthetic protocols.
5 The anatomy of the tooth. Tooth formulas in small animals. Abnormalities in the formation and development of teeth. Tartr, periodontitis, dental caries, pulpitis.
6 Dental fistula, broken teeth. Gingivitis. Pharyngitis. Aetiology and treatment of wound and fistula of oesophagus. Types, diagnosis and treatments of oesophagal stenosis. Oesophagal diverticulum. Anatomy of larynx. Wound, inflammation and oedema of larynx. Laryngeal hemiplegia. Goitre. Wound and stenosis of trachea.
7 Traumatic problems in cervical and lumbal regions. Neurological examination procedures.Torticollis. Hernia discal. Diseases that are cause of paraplegia. Spinal paralysis.
8 Clinical findings and treatments of superficial wound and complications, such as phlegmon and abscess of abdominal wall in small animals. Perforated wounds and complications of abdominal wall. Abdominal wall fistula.
9 Diagnosis and treatment of foreign bodies in stomach in small animals. Dilatatio and torsio ventriculi. Aetiology, diagnosis and treatment of invagination.
10 Types, diagnosis and treatment of ileus. Volvulus and torsion.Hernias in small animals. Aetiology, diagnosis and treatment of hernia diaphragmatica and hernia umbilicalis.
11 Aetiology, diagnosis and treatment of hernia inguinalis, hernia ventralis, and hernia perinealis in small animals. Wounds and tumors of anus and rectum in small animals. Clinical findings and treatment options of prolapsus recti. Diverticulum recti. Inflammation and tumors of anal sacs. Inflammation of anal glands.
12 Anatomy and examination techniques of urinary system in small animals. Aetiology, diagnosis and treatments of calculi of urinary bladder and urethra. Cystitis. Paralysis, tumours and ruptur of urinary bladder. Ectopic ureter and vesico-ureteral reflux. Diverticulum of urinary bladder. Urethral abnormalities.
13 Congenital abnormalities of testis in small animals. Orchitis, cryptorchidism, tumors and cysts of testicle, hydrocele, varicocele, heamatocele.
14 Wounds and abnormalities of penis and preputium. Posthitis and balanitis. Phymosis, paraphymosis, paralysis of the penis, tumors of penis and preputium in small animals. Description, aetiology, classification, clinical findings, medical and operative treatments of prostate diseases in dogs.
